Antebellum is the period in American history which is considered as the period before the
civil war and after the war of 1812. However, some historians expand this period to all years from
the acceptance of the constitution in 1789 to commence of the civil war. At this period of American
history, slavery was predominantly located in the in the South. This is where slavery occurred in
many different forms. Africans Americans were the main victim of the slavery. They were
enslaved on small farms, large farms, in the cities and towns, inside their homes, out in the fields
as well as in industries and transportation.
The working conditions of the slaves were pathetic. Even though the slavery had a wide
variety of faces, the fundamental concepts remained the same. In the South, slaves were assumed
to be the property, and they were considered as property because of their black color. Their status
as property was imposed by violence and threats which they received from the white. Both the
black and the white people lived together, but their lives together took many practices. This means
that in their living together as masters and slaves, their relationship was never compassionate but
scornful whereby the masters and slaves never came near to a point of equality. This exposed the
slaves to a lot of adverse working condition which was threatening to their lives (Bruce and
Dickson 2013).
