The Department of Homeland Security main function is the protection of the American
people through its operations that engage local and national law enforcement agencies in finding
and stopping threats to its citizens. The main responsibilities are; protecting the Country against
any act of terrorism, keeping the borders safe, enforcing immigration laws, ensuring there is
disaster preparedness and recovery efforts are in place in case of disasters and unifying of the
departments operations. The agencies that are part of the DHS include the Federal Emergency
and Management Agency (FEMA) and the United States Cost Guard. Also, the secret service,
the United States immigration and the customs department form part DHS. The other agencies
are the United States Citizenship and the Immigration Services (Department of Homeland
Security website).
Three United States laws that established DHS
The three Laws that were used in the establishment and directing of the operations in the
Department of Homeland Security include The Homeland Security Act of 2002 and The
Intelligence Reform and Terrorist Prevention Act of 2004. The Implementing Recommendations
of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007 also is part of the laws that formed the Department of
Homeland Security.
