They help humans with many things, such as guiding the visually impaired, detecting seizures, and supporting physical rehabilitation to help individuals recover. However, pets also can help relieve anxiety by providing comfort and companionship. Those with anxiety may have panic attacks, fear, or stress about what might happen. Anxiety involves emotional chaos and negative internal self-talk, spiraling out of control into a vicious navigate cycle. Pets help break the cycle by offering comfort, companionship, and a sense of purpose for their owners. Dogs in particular can reduce anxiety, they give comfort and companionship by giving unconditional love and loyalty to their owner. After a long day stressful at work a pet will be there to greet you, snuggle, and listen. Even though they cannot communicate with us, they still have a comforting presence. They give a sense of purpose for their owners because a dog needs to be fed, walked, and attention; they require dedication. However, “a thump of a happy tail motivates a person to get back to living”. The pet relies on you as you rely on it. Pets that are trained for physical or mental disabilities are called service dogs or therapy dogs. There are many important reasons to consider a service dog to help manage your anxiety; They can recognize signs of a panic attack, won’t hesitate, relaxing presence, and are a distraction. Dogs have incredible senses. A dog can notice when you begin to breathe heavily, when you begin biting your nails or pacing, and can even detect a change in your heart rate as you begin to feel PETS EFFECTS ON ANXIETY 3 stressed. A service dog will not hesitate to bother you until you take action when you are on a verge of a panic attack. Well-trained service dogs will nudge you, whine or bark, and stop moving until you let them help you. Dogs, provide a calming effect just by being nearby. Pets require attention, they would sit in your lap or cuddle up to you, thus taking your attention away from something that bothers you.
