Assignment Objectives

Explain demographic patterns in developed and developing countries and their impact on the environment

You will write a research paper about the demographic transition model and global food production and distribution for a growing human population to meet global food security goals. You must use APA format for the paper and documentation.

Include the following:

  • Describe the demographic transition model and how it was developed by demographers.
  • Describe the 4 phases of demographic transition.
    • For each phase, compare crude birth rates (CBR) to crude death rates (CDR), and state whether the population is stable, growing, or declining in each. ·
  • According to demographers, what factors lead to a decline of the CDR in phase two and the CBR in phase three of the demographic transition? ·
  • Briefly describe 3 living conditions in developed countries that have reached phase four, and contrast them with these same conditions in developing countries that remain in earlier phases.
    • Note: When comparing and contrasting, include details for each of the entities being compared and contrasted. For example, if comparing availability of clean water in a developed country, contrast availability of clean water in a developing country.
  • Research and describe a program for developing countries that would help improve 1 of the 3 conditions that you compared.
  • Food security means that everyone has an adequate amount of nutritious food to lead healthy lives. Research and describe 1 specific program that helps developing countries reach food security goals.

Introduction

With the fast growing population in countries all over the world, there has been need to
devise ways that can be used to feed the growing population. Food security goals have been set
that are aimed at securing food for the growing population. These goals have however been
impacted negatively by the ever growing population and there is need to do more to enhance
food security programs all over the world.

Demographic transition model

The demographic transition refers to the population changes in an economy based on the
crude birth rates as well as the crude death rates in the economy over a given period of time. This
transition is desirable in any economy as it is a sign of transition into an industrialized economic
system. Demographers develop the model based on historical population trends and they aim at
understanding the correlation between birth and death rates in an economy. This model is
developed over a period of time as demographers keep track of death and birth rates in an
economy. The demographic transition model indicates the decline in birth rates and death rates
from the 1970s and how this was greatly influenced by technology and improved farming
technologies.

Phases of demographic transition

There are four phases in the classical demographic transition. Stage one is the pretransition stage. This stage is characterized by high birth rates and high death rates. The crude
birth rate is therefore relatively high compared to the crude death rate. The low death rates can be

attributed to the positive measures taken towards famine, pestilence and war that are attributed to
deaths. The population growth during this stage is therefore kept low and is stable.
