For the past five decades, Galens & Kelly (2003) states that the Anglo-American literary
criticism has been subjugated by a critical theory termed as New Criticism. According to most
teaching institutions, New Criticism has not only been regarded as a way of criticism but
criticism by itself. However, it is very crucial to comprehend the principles of the New Criticism
basically as critical points and not as the facts regarding literature (Lynn, 1998). However, it
should always be noted that New Criticism insists that every text has a significant unity. In that
case, it is the responsibility of the reader to ascertain this unity after which he or she will infer
the text, pointing out in what manner every one of its portions underwrites to the central unity.
As a reader, there are several things that should cross your mind as you go through "The
Mother". These questions include; what basically is the uniting idea of the entire poem and what
holds the entire script together? I think that the title clearly points us to the complexity of the
poem. "The Mother" as the title recognizes her is the speaker who speaks about children that she
