The Company History
In 1946 three people, Akio Morita, Masaru Ibuka, and Tamon Maeda started a company named
Tokyo telecommunication engineering with capital from Morita's father. The company
manufactured its first tape recorder in 1950. After three years, Morita bought transistor
technology licensed from Western Electric for $25000. This acquisition sparked a revolution in
the Japanese consumer electronics. Tokyo telecommunication engineering launched one of the
very first transistor radios in 1955. In 1957 the company launched the first Sony trademarked
product which was a pocket-sized radio. Subsequent year the Tokyo telecommunication
engineering changed its name to Sony which was derived from "sonus" a Latin word for
"sound." And "sonny" meaning little man. Sony competitively ventured to newly emerged
markets for transistors TVs and solid-state videotape recorders.
Over the years, the company expanded and ventured t various products like; home video
recorders, solid-state condenser microphones, and Triniton color TV tube. The company used its
technology to widen its coverage beyond consumer electronics and started to move its
production to other countries. Sony becomes a major force in the entertainment industry after
purchasing CBS records, Columbian Pictures and TriStar Pictures. Later, the company produced
a game console, PlayStation, which is a big success of the company. In a joint venture, Sony
developed a line of personal computers with Intel.
