Case Study for Cultural formulation:
Paula Gomez is an 18 year old female Latina high school student who was born in the United States to immigrant parents who earned money from doing seasonal work in three states. School was not easy for Paula as she typically went to at least two, if not three, different schools each year where she often sat at the back of the room, ignored by teachers and classmates. It didn’t help that she was also one of the older children in her class. Very few people knew that she served as a translator for her monolingual Spanish parents. Nor did they know that she often had to work in the fields after school helping her parents. She however did know that school was important and she paid attention in class, doing as much as she could. During her ninth grade year, her father found stable work as a farm laborer in a rural area of California. For the first time, Paula attended the same school the entire year. She began to make friends and to do well academically. The school counselor took special notice of Paula and began to work with her. She encouraged Paula to take college prep classes. By her junior year, Paula was invited by one of the school counselors to consider going to an out of state college that was actively recruiting students of color. Paula, however was not sure that she wanted to attend a college where she believed that people of her background are not easily accepted. Having gone to so many schools across three states brought back memories of when she did not always feel accepted in those schools. She tells you, “I’m having a hard time figuring out what my best course of action is, and what will be to my greatest benefit. I want to do well, but I want to know I have a strong chance of success.”

CSL 640 & PSY 640 Cultural Formulation Assignment Guidelines A Cultural Formulation is an essential component of a case conceptualization. It describes the impact of culture on a person and answers the question: What role does culture play in a person’s presenting issues? (Sperry & Sperry, 2012). A detailed lecture, discussion and practice using this model will be provided to students prior to submitting assignments. This is a scholarly assignment meaning that it needs to follow APA style, formatting and references. The paper should be approximately 4 pages (maximum). You will receive a case study from your instructor from which you need to write a paper that will include the following elements: 1. Introduction- Brief explain of cultural formulation and introduction to paper. 2. Elements of a Cultural Formulation (based up Sperry & Sperry, 2012 model) a. Cultural identity—Client’s sense of belonging to a particular group or groups. b. Acculturation and acculturative stress—Level of adaptation to dominant culture and stress from acculturation which will include psychosocial difficulties. c. Cultural explanation/explanatory model –What are the person’s beliefs regarding the cause of their issues, condition or impairment? d. Culture vs. personality—Identify the extent of the impact of cultural dynamics and/or personality dynamics on the presenting issues in the case. 3. Culturally sensitive treatment: List two interventions would you implement with this client that would demonstrate cultural sensitivity and competence? 4. Conclusion/Summary Sample of Cultural Formulation from Sperry & Sperry: Geri identifies herself as a middle class African American but has little interest and no involvement with the African American community (cultural identity). She is highly acculturated, as are her parents, and there is no obvious acculturative stress (culture-acculturation). She believes that her depression is the result of stress at work and a “chemical imbalance” in her brain (cultural explanation). There are no obvious cultural factors that are operative. Instead, it appears that Geri’s personality dynamics are significantly operative in her current clinical presentation (culture v. personality). CSL 640 & PSY 640 For the purposes of this assignment, you will explain these factors in greater depth, creating at least 1 paragraph per element (a-d). Please use headings to identify each section and subsection of the paper.

! Cultural Formulation 2 Seetha Lakshmanan 10/16/2016 ! Cultural formulation is an efficient survey of a man's cultural foundation and the part of a culture in the appearance of side effects and brokenness. It incorporates the cultural identity of the individual, cultural definitions, cultural elements identified with nature and individual working, cultural components and a general examination of how cultural contemplations may impact them. Cultural Identity Adisa is an African studying abroad. He identifies with African cultures such as libations. According to Sperry & Sperry (2012), cultural identity is the sense of belonging of a person towards a particular group or ethnicity. It is formed through the socialization procedure and the impact of social organizations like the family, the instruction framework and the broad communications. Cultural identity is a means of understanding own self, those around as and specialization of people into cultural groups. The identity of individuals and groups includes both components of individual decisions and the reactions and states of mind of others. The identity that a person needs to state and which they may wish others to see them having may not be the one that others acknowledge or perceive. Thus, people are not at freedom to acquire any personality they like, and elements like their social class, their ethnic grouping, and their sex are probably going to impact how others see them. Acculturation and acculturative stress. Acculturation can be conceived of as a process of adaptation to stressful changes. Caplan (2007). It takes place as an aftereffect of contact between two or more social-cultural groups and their members. Adisa has come in contact with a different culture. Being African, an American culture is new to her and therefore is something she has to adapt to in order to ! survive. He is yet to be acculturated in the American culture. This is evident because he is not at ease with the way the different culture affects him. He feels alienated. At the individual level, it involves changes in a person’s behavioral repertoire. Berry, (2005). Acculturative stress is evident in Adisa’s experience of education away from Africa. The loneliness, difference in theories, frustrations, alienation and lack the sense of belonging are examples of acculturative stress she is going through. It can be defined as psychological discomfort as a result of the acculturation process. Cultural explanation/explanatory model. Adisa, is studying thanks to his community and family. They fund his education and he believes he has something to pay back to his family by being a doctor and helping them adopt their culture in a better manner. He believes he is where he is as result of his grandmother’s courage and determination. Cultural explanation, is a person’s convictions with respect to the reason for their issues or conditions. Different people base their situations on different causes, depending on their cultures mostly. For instance, if a child in Africa trips over a stone, it might be claimed to be a bad omen, or bewitching while in New York, it would merely be an accident. “Cultural differences affect patients’ attitudes about medical care and their ability to understand, manage, and cope with the course of an illness, the meaning of a diagnosis, and the consequences of medical treatment.” Mc Laughlin, L., & Braun, K. (1998). Culture vs. personality. Adisa personality is quite African and is based on respect to his elders, ancestors and recognition of the future generations. He feels he can lead Africans living abroad to embrace their culture together with the new one. He draws inspiration from Marcus Garvey, Dubois ! and Ida Wells. Culture provides decreased ambiguity and uncertainty in regular human conduct, communication, and making of decisions by giving a structure to situational understanding and restricting alternatives for proper conduct and reaction. Adisa bases his on the pillars of African Americans who endured harsh realities to make great achievements. Culturally sensitive treatment. In Adisa’s case, I would use interventions such as using methods and themes which are relevant to the patient’s. Such a method would put them at ease and ensure that their cultures are respected. This would help be open and forthcoming. The second intervention method would be to gather relevant information concerning the patient without particularly infringing on their privacy. As some people are not readily forthcoming, they have to be helped in speaking out by aid of hints on their lives. Collateral information can be derived from family members, medical and court records, probation and parole officers, community members, and others. Lopez, Martinez and Velasco, (2012) Conclusion/Summary. The impact of culture is hugely felt in the fields of language, health, leadership and marriage. These are big time cultural factors which are a milestone to the extent of a culture impact. The world has thousands of languages, most as a result of culture. Formation of new cultures leads to formation of new languages. For instance, slang. Health is also affected as discussed above. Different management methods exist in different parts of the world. In most traditional cultures, leadership comes with age while in civilised cultures, leadership comes with academic prowess. Marriage is also another field much affected by culture. From upbringing of the different genders, through courtship up to marriage, the difference is quite plain in the different cultures worldwide. In some parts of Africa, marriage partners are ! matched by elders while in more advanced cultures, partners choose their preferred partners. In India, the bride pays dowry but it is vice versa in Africa. With the rise in globalization, cultures are being changed and merged in the blink of an eye. Therefore, new cultures are being formed while others are getting extinct. ! References. 1. Sperry, L., & Sperry, J. J. (2012).
