Source Analysis Essay . The First Crusade. read the chapter introduction on pages 253-254, read the excerpt from The Song of Roland on pages 266-272, read the excerpt from Anonymous of Mainz: A Hebrew Account of the First Crusade on pages 274-279, and An Arabic Account of the First Crusade by Ali Ibn Al-Athir. From Chapter 8 of the Cole textbook read Competing Viewpoints: Preaching the First Crusade: Two Accounts on pages 272-273 which include pieces by Pope Urban II and Anna Comnena, daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus. Then write an essay that discusses the following:

Compare the views and opinions expressed in each document on the First Crusade. You might focus on the views expressed about the behavior and motivations of the Crusaders, the reasons for the Crusades, and the attitudes expressed by Christians, Jews, and Muslims towards each other. Or you may choose some other meaningful comparison of the documents. In any event, you should consider who created the document, when the document was created, and for what purpose it was created, and how that might color the views expressed. In your opinion, do these particular sources support the empirical approach to history or support its critics? Be sure to include examples from the sources to support your arguments.
