This paper topic will allow you to read authors that did not fit on the syllabus. At this point in the semester, students should feel comfortable applying the major themes and arguments in the course to texts we have not discussed in class. Here are your options: 1. Compare the treatment of the natural world in the poetry of Li Bo with the odes and satires of Horace (Vol. A) 2. Compare the function of women as a societal danger in either Othello or The Medea with either Lysistrata or Agamemnon (Vol. A) 3. Compare the negation of the body in the poetry of Sor Juana Inez De La Cruz with the poetry of John Donne (Vol. C) For three points of extra credit on your final grade, you may write about a second option from the list. This paper will also be due November 18. For extra credit, papers below 83 will receive no credit. Extra credit papers that do not follow all directions will receive no credit. Papers that do not follow assignment guidelines will receive no credit. The rubric is below. Content & Development:     The essay meets the requirements of the assignment The essay shows critical thinking & original analysis that go beyond summary, description, or personal expression Main points are supported by detail, examples, and explanation. The subject is explored in depth (exhibits an understanding of the complexities of the topic) and is not dominated by too much summary or repetition or unnecessary information. Purpose & Organization:    The thesis (main argument) can be easily identified and is appropriate for the assignment The essay includes an effective introduction and conclusion, and the conclusion relates to the introduction and fulfills the reader’s expectations Paragraphs are unified and each serves a clear purpose with effective transitions to new ideas Style / Word Choice:     The vocabulary is precise and used correctly The writing is strong and clear. There is variety in vocabulary, sentence length, and sentence structure. Style, tone, and voice are all appropriate for the audience, purpose, and topic. Grammar / Mechanics:   The paper uses standard grammar without major errors that affect the paper’s clarity (i.e., run-ons or fragments, pronoun references, subject/verb agreement, verb tenses). Correct spelling and punctuation help to convey points clearly.
