Metabolism in the Media Assignment Name: NHM 361-001 Fall 2016 ___________________________________________ Be sure to read and answer each question thoroughly, and submit the completed assignment in class on November 18th. Please note that it is a requirement of the assignment to also provide a copy of the news story you select. This will be taken into account in the grade. Objectives:  Assess the quality of a news story about nutrition/metabolism that has garnered the attention of the popular media.  Compare the accuracy of a news story to the biochemistry it describes. Instructions: 1. Select a recent news story from a major print media outlet that relates to one of the topics we have studied this semester. The story you select should:  Pertain to nutrition and metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, or lipids  Describe information about this topic to the general public  Have been published within the last 12 months Suggested sources:  Newspapers: New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, etc.  Media websites: CNN, MSN, etc. (Often, these networks have medical journalists on staff.)  Magazines: Glamour, Redbook, Men’s Health, Time, etc. 2. Summarize the news story in your own words in one well-written paragraph:  Identify the source, author, and publication.  Were experts quoted? Who and how many?  Describe the main points of the story in your own words. 3. Evaluate – Compare the accuracy of the lay media article to the biochemistry it describes.    In one well-written paragraph, describe the normal biochemical pathway(s) involved. In another well-written paragraph, explain whether or not the scientific aspects of the news story are accurately described. Why or why not? Is the article alarmist or sensationalist? Do you see any evidence of bias? What would you tell a patient/client who asks for your opinion of this story? 4. Attend class on November 18th prepared to discuss your evaluation of this story. Note, attendance and participation in this discussion group are mandatory components of the assignment.
