ASSIGNMENT THREE – THE SOCIAL SELF INSTRUCTIONS: Which comes first: our sense of self, or social contact? That is, do we have an innate personality, or are we dependent on social contact to develop our sense of self? Theorists reason that if a sense of self is innate, we will develop into who we are regardless of whether or not we experience social contact. If, on the other hand, social contact develops our sense of self, children deprived of such would think and behave very differently than other children. Children deprived of social contact (called “feral children”) add insight to this question. Provide your answer after each question below. Do not delete the questions. Use narrative form when responding (i.e. complete sentences and paragraphs). Your Name __________________________ 1. Review the information in the Socialization chapter of your Wikibook regarding feral children. Click on the link “feral” in the Wikibook, and explore the three links provided to read about cases of feral children. You are also welcome to explore the examples in the link below, though be aware that at least one has been found to be exaggerated: http://listverse.com/2008/03/07/10-modern-cases-of-feral-children/ 2. ASSIGNMENT FOUR: CAN YOU TRULY CHANGE A PERSON’S NATURE? INSTRUCTIONS: Provide your answer after each question below. Do not delete the questions. Use narrative form when responding (i.e. complete sentences and paragraphs).  View the documentary Anybody’s Son Will Do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_G2u1RrLOk  View the 17 minute segment below from the documentary Jesus Camp: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5lidx_jesus-camp-part-1_news For your information, Jesus Camp is a type of camp organized by many evangelical Christian denominations in the U.S. Children are brought to an isolated location for several days and exposed to the type of services you see in the video. Children are discouraged from bringing cell phones, Ipods, computers, or other things that might distract them from the focus of the camp, and are expected to stay for the duration. Visitors are generally not allowed in while the camp is in session. Your name: ______________ 1. Develop five paragraphs. In each paragraph, identify a different technique of resocialization used in marine boot camp, as depicted in the documentary Anybody’s Son Will Do (shown in class). Describe the intended purpose of each technique you have identified. 2. In a sixth paragraph, describe any similarities you see in the techniques used in Jesus Camp, compared to the marine corp. Then, highlight any important differences in the techniques of socialization/resocialization used by the two groups. 3. In a final paragraph, draw a conclusion: can you change a person’s nature? What techniques of resocialization do you think are particularly effective? Should techniques like this be allowed to be used in a free and open society, in your opinion? That is, does the end justify the means? Explain.
