1) introduce you to the literature of higher and post secondary education,

(2) acquaint you with some of the issues that are in or related to higher education governance;

(3) give you practice in developing and communicating thoughtful reactions to what you read in the literature;

(4) help you make connections between theory/research and current realities of governance and organization of higher education;

(5) help you reflect on what you bring to your analysis of the article in the area of biases and assumptions.

The paper should address an article from, InsideHigherEducation.com,

Your task is to find a major article that interests you and is relevant to this course, read, and reflect on it, and write a short 5 page paper which first, briefly summarizes the article and second, communicates a thoughtful reaction to it. Your reaction might be in the form of an opinion on an issue; a series of questions about the topic which, if answered, would further illuminate it; a careful weighing of the pro’s and con’s on an issue; etc. It is NOT enough merely to say so-and-so is “interesting” or that "you agree." WHY is it interesting? What do you THINK about it? WHY do you agree (or disagree)? How is it RELATED TO OUR STUDY of the governance and organization of higher education? Given what you have studied in the course, how might you INTERPRET or MAKE MEANING of the article?

Your reaction paper should have several key content components and be well written. It will:

  1. Introduce the article and provide an overview of the key concepts or ideas presented in the article
  2. Describe what you believe, and what the readings in the course indicate, to be the weakness and strengths in the authors’ argument, claims, methodology, and/or best practices that are presented.
  3. Provide a personal, critical reaction and reflection to the article and make explicit your reasons for agreeing or disagreeing, and clearly articulate your own biases or assumptions that lead you to your position
  4. Offers new insights, or new interpretations of article based on knowledge gained from course material.
  5. Be written in a well organized manner, in APA format, and have few errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

On the cover page, be sure to include a complete APA-style citation for the article.

Reaction Paper on Article: “Renewed Diversity Push”

Over time, operating environment of higher education institutions has experienced major
transformations. The institutions have witnessed democratic reform movements accelerated by
technological advancement, which have heavily influenced the way people share information and
communicate (Hendrickson et al., 2013). In recent past, many institutions of higher learning have
experienced student protests against the racial inequality in these institutions across the nation. In
order to address the problem, many institutions have developed a raft of measures to ensure that
all students enjoy equal rights as well as posing diversity as a strength, which brings on many
opportunities. As such, many institutions have introduced or on the process of developing
diversity programs as well as online multicultural training so as to adapt to these realities (New,
2016). In addition, due to increasing pace of change, leaders of these institutions are expected to
understand how to manage them effectively as well as how to lead them efficiently.
The article claims that the issues related to gender identity, ethnicity, social class, sexual
orientation, nationality, and religion should be addressed through online multicultural training,
diversity programs as well as open dialogue (New, 2016). This would create a forum where
students and other stakeholders in a certain institution gather to share their experiences and
assumptions in regards to such issues. This helps to develop and shape individuals’ perception on
more concrete grounds supported by facts creating a harmonious learning environment. The
article identifies that concept of diversity cultivates the principle of inclusion of diverse views
and communities in decision making and various activities of the institutions (New, 2016).
Hence, for many institutions mitigating the influences of stereotyping thinking and unconscious
biases have been issues of high concern because failing to address them could cripple the
functions of a learning institution.

New (2016), claiming that the prevailing situation can be solved by diversity and
multicultural training is misguided because the article does not provide the evidence supporting
the viability of these programs. Due to effects of these programs, a feasibility study should be
conducted to ensure that in order to ascertain the supporting structures required for effective
implementation of these programs. As such, any undesirable effects will be countered with
appropriate mechanisms, thus ensuring the programs gain the support of all stakeholders in an
institution. Another weakness the article has is the generalization of the issue causing student
protests. The article claims that racial inequality in campuses triggered the protests (New, 2016).
This is overgeneralization because there could be other underlying issues which were not
uncovered. Students could protest over issues such as the workload of their respective courses or
due to their exam unpreparedness, but they paint such issues the name of racial inequality. As
such, an in-depth study should have been carried out to explicitly discern the real concern behind
the protests.
However, the article has strengths, which cannot be disputed. The authored presented a
real solution applicable to solve the issues of students’ unrest due to racial inequality. The article
analyzed the citizenship@mizzou as a classic model through which other institutions can copy to
counter the issues of racial inequality. Students at the Missouri University are required to
undertake a compulsory “citizenship” program, which involves a sequence of workshops in order
to help students integrate and appreciate each other irrespective of their backgrounds and beliefs
(New, 2016). Students gather together to share their questions and views concerning diverse
groups in the institution. Secondly, the article explores the numerous benefits of adopting the
concepts of diversity in the institutions of higher learning. The article explains that since
universities are a marketplace for generation of ideas, diversit...
