In the introduction and abstract to the article “The Impact of Professional Development Program on Teachers’ work with English Language Learners, 2007”, Harutunian illustrated obviously the statement of problem and the purpose of the study which address linguistic and culturally needs of English language learners. The rational reasons for the study that today many teachers who teach English language learners are untrained. Also, the study guided by two research questions and designed by qualitative method including Interviews, questionnaire. The researcher explained the finding into three areas of professional development. He shows tables if mean, median and range. In the last part of the study, he demonstrated the limitation that threat internal validity such as: the size of sample and teachers know their roles in the research. In the article “Learning how to focus on language while teaching mathematics to English language learners: a case study of Courtney, 2014”, Chval, Pinnow, and Thomas, stated in the abstract and introduction the challenges that face teachers in mathematics for ELLS and how to develop these teachers. They conducted the study by using qualitative method which based on filmed two math lessons in the classroom and case study along side the themes and codes of the qualitative design. They explained the data by NVivo9 analysis software and offer the report of the meeting. In discussion part illustrated the significance of professional development in mathematics teaching for English learners but the authors did not mention the challenges and limitation of implementing the project. The author Parnell in the article “The Impact of Restructuring the Language Arts Intervention Program and Its Effect on The
Academic Achievement of English
Language Learners, 2008” stated in the introduction a clear statement of the purpose and a research question. The research conducted the study by utilizing Qualitative and quantitative instruments for control and experimental groups. The participants are grouped based on language levels in the second through six grade. In the qualitative method, the researcher shows open-end questioning and interview. For reporting the data, Parnell used Statistical significance, t-test, effect size and the Cohen’s d test. Although the author made effort to reach the results, the study has limitations which are: non random selection of participants and an internal limitation was in the use of a pre-post nonequivalent control group design. The article “The Impact of Word Study Intervention on Adult English Learners‟ Spelling and Reading, 2014”by Shaw, the author clarified the aim of the study and the literature review which regards systematic studies of the effect of the professional development in words for English learners. A mixed methodology including statistical and qualitative analyses are used to conduct the study and participants are assigned in non random selection and divided in experimental and control groups. The instruments in the study are questioner, interviews and case study technique. To report the data, the author used mean, standard deviations and p values. In the part of discussion, the author indicated third limitations that impeded the project. Kea and Trent in their article “Providing Culturally Responsive Teaching in Field-Based and Student Teaching Experiences: A Case Study,2013” illustrated in the introduction the importance to conduct teacher preparation program to address culturally and linguistically divers students. The authors in literature review offered studies that focused on culturally and responsive teaching matters. Moreover, they relied on mixed methods by using case study and checklist. While the researchers reported the data and explained the finding by tables, It is difficult for readers to understand the result clearly. In fact, there are many limitations that threated the study like the data is collected by the course instructors, so that may introduced bias in collecting the data and analysis. The articles that are related to my topic “Teachers’ Professional Development to Improve English Language Learners’ Achievements in Science and Literacy”, focus on the significance to improve teaching English language learners. The articles’ designs have internal validity which means that the finding and outcomes are accurate and caused by the affect (Treatment) “Ary, Jacobs, Sorensen and Walker, p. 2014”. However, some researches have selection bias when participants are assigned by nonrandom ways so that threated the internal validity. Moreover, some groups are not equivalent and have vary characteristics. Choosing homogeneous groups is an effective way to control the effect of extraneous variables and eliminate the differences between them “Ary, Jacobs, Sorensen and Walker, p.2014”. In addition, all of the researches have a clear of the purpose statement and research questions, but eight studies do not have hypothesis or alternative explanations. All the articles’ findings and conclusions reveal that development intervention lead to promote achievements in English language teaching of science and literacy. Six of researches used a qualitative method and interview, questioner and case study instruments. However, the rest of the studies utilized mixed methodologies which are qualitative and quantitative. the interventions are conducted to test the students in only elementary schools, and no research designed for high school levels. On the other hand, the gap of the literature of the articles is that no study conducted to test English learners in different levels. In fact, the researches designed only for students in elementary schools. As a result, it is difficult to generalize the findings for teaching all English learners. social science research, generalizations is hard because researchers deal with people have different features. Each group or level has different teachers, learners and environment, so generalization the data from a group to others may lead to limited validity “Ary, Jacobs, Sorensen and Walker, p. 18, 2014”.
