Project Overview

As a team you need to work on the project below. You are not allowed to select your own projects. You need to develop the design, write a technical report, and present the findings. A prototype model should also be built and demonstrated.

Project Evaluation

The criteria for evaluating your project will be (1) application of teaming skills, (2) technical background, (3) level of analysis and details, (4) creativity and innovation, (5) final report, (6) oral presentation, (7) model and a demo.

Project Idea

Design a mechanical sorter system that will sort ping pong balls into three different classes based on their weight, i.e. heavy, medium and light.

Project Rules

Materials used: Cardboard, staples, glue, tape, syringe, ping pong balls and rubber bands.

  •  The sorter system should distinguish between eight ping pong balls: 3 heavy, 2 medium and 3 light
  •  A syringe can be used to fill the ping pong balls with water.
  •  The sorter system should have one input point to receive all eight balls and four outputs for each class of the ping pong balls.
  •  Each output should be marked clearly if it is for heavy, medium and light and place them in 3 separate trays.

 The heavy ping pong balls are made from normal ping pong balls fully filled with water.

 The medium ones are 1/2 filled with water.

 The light balls are not filled.

  •  The balls will be stored in a cylinder open from both sides and then will be released all together.
  •  The judges will use the “same” random order of the 8 balls among all groups when testing the designs during the competition. The random order will not be announced earlier.
  •  The Judges will user their own table tennis ball.
  •  Each group will have a second chance to sort the balls if the system could not properly sort all 8 balls in the first chance. The group can use another model or the same model for the second trial.
  •  The design system must sort all 8 balls.

Conclusion

Reasons for conducting the study and the purpose of the report:

The reason behind conducting this research was to work in teams, and to evolve an idea to a sketch to a real life model. The reason for writing this report is to document our study and research and explain in details the difficulties and procedures we went through while building the cranes

Each concept was rated by the team on a scale of 0 to 10 for each criterion. The rating was multiplied by the criterion weight and then summed. Alternative “1” was chosen as the optimum.

Final decision:

In conclusion, according to the calculations made using the matrix table we found out that alternative 3 got the most total points; therefore, we decided that the third model would be the one we would use. The reasons behind this decision were this crane was the lightest in weight (181 grams), was the most stable out of the 3 cranes and it functioned the best.

During the process of building the crane we found much unexpected results. These results were that we managed to build a crane with a weight of 181 grams and could carry 200 grams. This result was unexpected since the crane was lighter than the weight it carried.

Recommendations:

If anyone is to ever conduct this project we would recommend that one should first calculate the calculations of the counter weight needed to carry that specific weight. Then make an outline and sketch the ideas that come to one’s mind. Later on, one should make sure that he or she has the accurate measurements in order to avoid any mistakes and inaccuracies while building the crane. After this step we advise one to use barbeque sticks to build the crane since we obtained the best results using this material. We also advise one to try using straws. Although everyone is trying to avoid using straws since they are easily bendable when force is applied we advise one to use straws. The reason we advise one to use straws is they are light in weight and when used in the right way and right place they no longer become bendable. Furthermore, we advise one to use glue gun rather than superglue or wooden glue. This advice was based upon our trials. When we used wooden glue it took about 4 hours to dry out while the glue gun took less than 1 minute.
