ARTH 100 – Art Appreciation Midterm Essay (1500 words)

Many sculptures/humorous comparison of satirical figures.

·  The aim of this essay is to research and chronicle the history of a recurring image or concept in art history. 

·  Four images

·  Examples of recurring images or themes may be the Monarch of the Glen, royal figures, biblical figures or stories, self-portraits, burials, or even something as simple as cats. 

Questions

·  Begin your essay with a list of images you’re analyzing,

·  Including the title and artist,

·  Thesis statement that describes your main points on the work. 

·  Next, describe and compare the images to each other. 

·  Include the date in which it was completed (and don’t forget to mention the medium!) and what purpose the art may have served at the time. 

Instructions

·  Try to avoid simply dedicating a paragraph or two to each image alone and then spit-balling a brief compare/contrast at the end.  Instead, keep the comparison between images active throughout the essay while describing each image

·  Wrap up the essay with a concluding paragraph that highlights the primary similarities and differences in your points. 

·  I also ask that you embed each of your images at the end of your essay along with the artist name, title, medium, and date completed under each image.
