Introduction

Michael Boylan’s To the Promised Land is an intriguing and interesting text that explores
various philosophical aspects to trigger the reader’s critical thinking (Boylan, 2015). The theme
of forgiveness is evident from the behavior and relationships of characters, particularly Moses
and Peter, who are the main characters. These are two college friends who realize the difficulties
in leading moral lives after school and they learn to survive in a world of many evils such as
betrayal, murder and corporate crime (Boylan, 2015). As their consistency in morality is in
question, the reader also develops a personal critical angle that helps him or her to evaluate him
or herself with regard to tough choices according to circumstances that emerge in life.
Nevertheless, Moses and Peter attempt to remain friends. As a lawyer, Moses Levi must battle
the charge of murder. Each character’s earlier notion of morality depicted the “promised land” to
be a time and a place where the greater good prevails. However, each takes his own path to
counter or accept the compromises he faces in the real world. Therefore, Boylan (2015)
examines the fundamental problems in the human experience and creates a forum for
comprehending certain reactions and decisions. Moses gets entangled in an unfortunate
experience where he seems to be assisting a villain as he is forced to support a particular
company that degrades the environment despite the harm it cost the people in the community. He
betrays Peter Simon, his once college roommate and he helps a large chemical company to win a
court case despite having killed a multitude of people through its actions (Boylan, 2015).
Moses Levi’s Contemplation Scene
In this particular scene, Moses is in deep thought and he is unable to experience peace of
mind since he won the court case in defense of Waste Disposal Systems, Inc. To emphasize how
