Michael Kelly KNES 395 Final While interning at Aberdeen high school football team tis semester under Coach Brooks I have learned more about being a teacher, supporter and more so a student of our student athletes but most of all I have enjoyed my first season of coaching football. I have become so much more aware of the teachings of character as I was always taught that in the past wile playing football for many years but now I know the true meaning of good character as me and the coaching staff incorporated that in our athletes. My role while interning at Aberdeen was to coach the defensive backs and polish them throughout the season, help assist the head coach in practice activities, assist in the weight room, break down film and help student athletes in study hall. The ultimate goal for the football team was to create nice young men and make it to states, which is always the goal of Coach Brooks who has made it to a handful of state championships including my senior yeah of high school. We also wanted to create a sound group of players who we could help them become great players physically and mentally. The goals were as I expected coming from Coach Brooks as he as always had a winning tradition and many kids love to play for him because they know there is a great chance of gaining exposure. The first few months of coaching at the season working along side of head coach Johnny Brooks has been a great experience overall. When I initially began on the site I felt really comfortable working with the coaches and players mainly because they known of me before hand. Other than getting along with my peers the first couple of weeks as I ran some of the drills and received the opportunity to run my own set of drills with the defensive backs, which the coaches really enjoyed and found effective. Head coach Johnny Brooks stated that he was impressed with my work and that if I needed a job after school, “I have a home”. The coaching style that I wanted to bring to the table was to be calm and ready to work. I try to treat the players as they were men and we were all a family while creating a college/advanced environment, which creates more interest. Over time I have learned that the kids have to be taught things at a much slower pace than college football and I have to learn that they are not as advanced yet so I have to actually teach them step-by-step. And that was a small hurdle that I overcame and learned from shadowing the head coach. Another thing that I learned while at the internship this semester is that even when losing, as a coach you cannot show frustration and anger toward the result of the game to show the kids that you cant win every game although it is the main objective, most of all it is an important time to show character. While shadowing coach Brooks coaching style I find that it is interesting because does not yell a lot but kept the good energy within the team. Because of the good energy around the team the experience is so much more enhanced being around such a great group of individuals and giving them the tools to be successful As to now since my previous update I have notice maturity in terms of growth in how I carry the coaching position during my time at Aberdeen. As I continued to shadow Coach Brooks and spending much of my time with him speaking about football and other things outside of football he has shown me the ins and outs of the game and more. Most importantly he has shown me how to strengthen my relationship with our student athletes. Through these steps I have learned to simply have fun and try to reach the athletes on a more relatable level and showing real genuine interest or counseling in their lives such as school work and issues such as school and family. One of these things that I take pride in was helping and mentoring a kid who’s grandfather had been sick during the course of the and in mid season he passed, after the funeral I could see that it bothered him a lot during the remainder of the season. Through out the time I have gained a close bond with him with always checking up and motivating him to keep the drive. Another way that I’ve reached out to players is trying to get the together to do mini workouts outside of practice and even get them connected with some of the trainers in the area that I’ve worked with for my pro day at Towson as they will be approaching their senior year next year. Another thing that I’ve learned is that although it is great to connect with the players, it is also important to connect with the other coaches as well so that we are all on the same page and we have the time to actually know one other. Ultimately through the time period from the last update I have learned about building relationships/ connecting with my peers, which have helped us as we just had a win on the road this past week. Through my final few weeks as the season came to a close I began to finds hat many of the seniors began to feel pressure and more passionate about the game which is normal. As a coaching staff we were helping players decide with patience as to who wanted to attend college and evaluating players for college coaches who were visiting as their seasons were coming to an end as well. As a result we found that about quite a few players were ready for the next level and a few who may have to walk on at their future college. But next season we have a hand full of kids who will do great their senior year, with plenty opportunity to gain exposure from college coaches/recruiters. As a team we put ourselves in a situation that required us to win our final three games witch we won two and lost our final game which would have automatically gotten us into the playoffs. Missing the playoffs by a game was devastating to the coaches but more so our seniors because some may never play the game that they have been playing since they were kids ever again. A lesson that our student athletes learned beyond football is to finish what you start, nothing is handed to you without sacrifice. As a first year defensive back coach my defensive backs had a total of 12 interceptions. There were two senior corners one with 7 interceptions alone and the other with 3 interceptions, who both participated and were starter in the Harford County All-Star Game, which I take great, pride in and motivates me as a coach. This internship related to the classroom mainly when it comes to being able to teach character, leadership and responsibility but all in all, it’s more to it than winning, it is more about the experience and lesson learned. Moving forward in this internship I have been asked to spend time with the kids over the off-season and help out with the little league football team in the area. Creating a positive experience for the kids has been a pleasure as an alumnus and shed some of my knowledge on them to help them become successful. I think that if anyone would want to get into coaching, starting at the high school level is a great route to take especially along side of a group of staff that are just as passionate as you are about the sport and helping our youth. While working at with Aberdeen football team I don’t think that I would make any changes except for allowing the kids to participate in more weight room activities throughout the course of the season. Assist in the weight room

Break down film and help student athletes in the study hall

The ultimate goal of the football team was to create nice young men who would make it to
