Study - Teaching and Learning Strategies

Introduction

The learning outcomes for this case study:

  • Discuss teaching and learning strategies relevant to the cognitive domain.
  • Discuss teaching and learning strategies relevant to the affective domain.
  • Discuss teaching and learning strategies relevant to the psychomotor.

Directions

  1. Based on the information presented in this case study provide answers to the statements listed below.
  2. Your Assignment should be written as a 3–4 page paper observing the rules of 6th edition APA format.
  3. Use each numbered task listed as a Level 1 Heading style in your paper.

Scenario

The scenario presented here is the second installment of the unfolding case study which began in Unit 2 with a meeting between the Dean, Sheila, Nursing Student Kim, and Nursing Clinical Instructor, Andre.

Currently the three participants are in a meeting where Kim has voiced concerns regarding a clinical failure based on faculty weaknesses related lack of recognition of cultural practices and indifference to student learning during the clinical experience. After Kim’s concerns are presented the Dean states, “Kim, thank you for meeting with us today, I will be in touch with you before your clinical experience next week after Andre and I meet privately. Thank you again for your time. We want you to be successful.”

After Kim leaves the Dean begins the conversation with Andre stating, “Okay, now I would like to hear your side of the story.”

  1. Do you agree with the way in which the Dean has handled the process so far from a student perspective? Provide rationales with your answer including at least one scholarly peer-reviewed resource as support for your choices.
  2. Do you agree with the way in which the Dean has handled the process so far from a faculty perspective? Provide rationales with your answer including at least one scholarly peer-reviewed resource as support for your choices.Andrea responds to the Dean with a blank stare and states, “I have no idea why this student has a problem. We have to talk with patients face to face and I can’t help if he is of Asian descent. Also, I have only been late a few times when my child was sick and I had to make arrangements so I could attend clinical. I am feeling like I am being called out for a student’s incompetence.”At this point the Dean states, “Andre why don’t we back up just a minute and you can help me understand how you prepare for clinical. For example, can you discuss examples of teaching and learning strategies you used to help students meet last week’s clinical outcomes?”Clinical Outcomes
    • Outcome 1 - Explain the five rights of administration for medications used in the postpartum period.
    • Outcome 2 - Practice writing a detailed, objective, and efficient nursing note.
    • Outcome 3 - Demonstrate an assessment of a postpartum woman.
  3. Develop a teaching and learning strategy for the first outcome with at least one cognitive objective, one psychomotor objective, and one affective objective included. Provide rationales with your selections including at least one scholarly peer-reviewed resource as support for your choices.
  4. Develop a teaching and learning strategy for the second outcome including at least with at least one cognitive objective, one psychomotor objective, and one affective objective. Provide rationales with your selections including at least one scholarly peer-reviewed resource as support for your choices.
  5. Develop a teaching and learning strategy for the third outcome with at least one cognitive objective, one psychomotor objective, and one affective objective. Provide rationales with your selections including at least one scholarly peer-reviewed resource as support for your choices. After thinking for a few moments Andre responded to the Dean stating, “I have the students give me report when I come onto the clinical floor. After we discuss the patient assignment, I check in with staff nurses regarding concerns with students’ behaviors and actions. Throughout the day I am present for all medication administration and documentation.”The Dean responded, “Andre did you attend the required training for new clinical faculty we provided at the hospital where you work?”Andre stated, “No that was my day off and I was busy with my kids but my course leader, Edith, said it would be okay and I could plan on having a clinical group in the fall.”
  6. Describe two strategies the Dean should suggest to help Andre. Provide rationales with your selections including at least one scholarly peer-reviewed resource as support for your choices.
  7. Would you allow Andre to return to teaching his clinical group the next week? Provide a rationale to support your answer.
  8. What is your recommended response the Dean should prepare for the student, Kim? Provide rationales with your choices.
  9. Should the Dean involve the senior faculty, Edith, in the discussion at this point?
    • If you answer no then explain why and provide an alternative solution.
    • If you answer yes explain why and explain how you would involve Edith is this process.

The way in which the Dean has handled the process so far from a student perspective

From a student perspective, I do not agree with the way the dean as handled the process
so far. While it is important for the Dean to hear the side of Andre’s story, he should not have
turned the student away after having set a meeting for the three of them in the first place. The
first that he openly turns away the Kim from the meeting could create an impression of unfair
judgment (Tucker, 2017). He should have secretly listened to each of the two sides of the story
separately before setting the final meeting. Besides, the fact that Kim has already failed could
imply that the Dean has not made enough effort to solve the dispute between the instructor and
the student.

From the Faculty Perspective

Anybody would agree with any judgment that seems to be made in his or her favor. To
the instructor, meeting privately with the Dean is a great idea, which I would agree with from the
faculty perspective. Other than turning the student away after setting the meeting, meeting
privately with the instructor is a recommendable idea (Tucker, 2017).

Learning Strategy by Andre: The first Outcome

Regarding the examples of teaching and learning strategies that Andre used to help
students meet the previous week’s clinical outcome, the first outcome entails the five rights of
