Musical Artist: Lucky Philip Dube
The artist was born on 3 August 1964 on a small farm in the Eastern Transvaal near Ermelo. He
was named Lucky since her mother; Sarah felt his birth was lucky after some unsuccessful pregnancy efforts,
so fortunate that she called him the name. The mother was the sole provider in the family because she had
broken up with the husband before Lucky’s and was made to leave two other children (Thand and Patrick)
and Lucky, in taking care of her mother. She could be paid lowly in her job as a domestic laborer where she
was rarely able to send the children money back home. Lucky’s father was an irresponsible drunkard and
rarely interacted or associated with him. His father’s behavior made Lucky to start his career and started
singing against, drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol (Majapelo & Sello, 10).
The artist began to work in the white people’s gardens at a very younger age when his age-mates
could go to school. He continued with the manual job before he could school with the intent of earning more
to support his low-income family with an irresponsible father. He succeeded at school and found his talent
in life-music. Before he started singing reggae music, he was a member of the choir at his school, and after
few months, he was chosen to be a choir leader. As a choir leader, he excelled since his choir was placed
third in the inter-school contest (Majapelo & Sello, 12).
The artist got some instruments by fortune in a school cupboard and formed a group with some a
