POST 1:

Many in society benefit from public goods in which they did not pay for. Many social welfare programs as well as program job placement programs can be described as public goods which are not funded by those whom benefit from them. The whole argument that surrounds the consumption of goods for free-riders is a valid one indeed. The burden of funding such public goods falls on the back of tax payers whom are constantly being bombarded with regressive taxes. On the other hand, the benefits form such social programs are a necessary evil in American society. This notion that public goods which are not funded by those whom benefit from them is a form of market failure is senseless. Yes, the prevailing issue of public goods is based on the microeconomics of the society in which the public good serves. The so called free rider program i.e. public goods are not the main source of market collapse in that the United States has the resources, i.e. goods to be able to sustain these so called free rider programs. I do understand the lack of funding that has plagued many American cities over the past decade. Many municipalities struggle to provide basic city services for their residents which is a public good. So, let’s take Detroit for instance. The city is tasked with still providing basic city services such as fire and police while their tax base has shrunk tremendously and there are in economic downfall. They still have a duty to provide such services even though their unemployment rate might be high and many residents are out of work. My question to my classmates is what are these municipalities supposed to do, not provide basic city services, i.e. public goods?
