Description

Imagine that you are working as a veterinary scientist and you have been called in to assess some grazing pasture for livestock. Using information from the following links below or other resources that you find in your research, prepare a report on five different plants that pose a threat to grazing livestock in one Canadian province.

All labs require written lab reports, along with complete answers to all questions.

In the report, you should:

1. identify five different plant species that are potentially poisonous or toxic to livestock such as cows or horses.

2. Describe what the plants look like, including descriptions of any flowers or seeds, so that the farmer or rancher could identify the plants.

3. Discuss the typical habitat for the plant. Where would the plant most likely be found?

4. Describe the symptoms or signs of this poisonous/toxic plant in livestock.

5. Asses how toxic the plant is. For example, how much of a plant would cattle have to ingest for the cattle to become ill.

6. Identify what treatment options might be available for livestock who have been infected. If a plant is highly toxic, it is okay to state that treatment is unlikely to succeed.

Remember, I need a written lab report with the answers to these questions in it. Thank you.

Five different plant species that are potentially poisonous or toxic to livestock such as
cows or horses
Western Water Hemlock
The most poisonous plant in North America is Water Hemlock. It so dangerous to
every person’s as well as domesticated animals especially One root known to even cause
death to dairy animals .during spring the poison spread to every part of the plant thus cause a
lot of destruction to domesticated animals while during late summer, most of the poison are
contained in the roots, however these can be pulled out by a grazing animals if the soil is wet.
These plants occur during wet ranges such as springs or in stream edges.
Seaside Arrow grass
The second most poisonous plant in Alberta is Arrow grass. It is an upright plant that
appear more likely as grass, it has a spike-like bloom stalk. The plants grows in salt bogs as
well as soluble marshes, whereby during its growing period or part of it, is usually
submerged.it is usually found individually or in patches. Young leaves have proven to be
more dangerous and a small quantity such as 2kg when ingested can cause dead over a short
period of time thus termed as lethal. Arrow grass formed earlier before spring than field
grasses and animals in need of green pasture may feed on it .same way since the plants are
highly salty animals may feed on it regularly on the off chance due to lack of salt.
Death Camas
Death camas (Zigadenus spp.)Which is the first plants to begin its growth in early
spring is the common name for most species of plants that are poisonous to cattle. Death
comas may be heavily feed on and therefore cause severe losses in case of inadequate

forage. All forage may be covered by Spring snow storms except death camas, which may
emerge through the snow and is accessible to the livestock. The most affected of livestock is
