Lecture 3 Discussion Questions
1. What is the primary cause of the astronomical seasons?
The primary cause of astronomical season is due to the earth’s axial tilt and the way it
orbits around the Sun on a slant. The angle tilt of the earth is about 23.5 degrees, and this
obliquity makes different regions of the earth point toward and away from the sun at
different times of the year.
2. What are the two factors that influence the amount of solar energy per incoming
area each day? Explain how each varies over the course of a year (for a given
location).
The two main factors influencing the amount of solar energy per incoming area each day
are the angle of solar rays and the duration of daylight. For instance, a particular region
will receive more insolation if the sun shines longer or if the sun shines more directly or
both. Due to the earths tilting angle, only one line of latitude on the rotating surface of the
earth can receive sun radiation at right angle, therefore the rest will receive it at varying
oblique angles.
