Leadership is all about the inspiration of subordinates to engage in the achievement or
performance of a defined goal (Bryman, 2013). It is different from management in the sense that
it cannot be taught. It can only be enhanced and learned through mentorship. One very important
aspect of leadership is ethics (Bryman, 2013). Ethics can be defined as fundamental principles and
concepts of human conduct that is considered decent and acceptable in society (DesJardins and
McCall, 2014). Ethics involve obeying the law, promoting equality of all human beings while at
the same time being concerned of their rights, safety and health. Ethical decision making therefore
involves choosing the best alternative that is consistent with the principles of ethics among several
alternatives (DesJardins and McCall, 2014). An ethical decision is therefore arrived at only after
eliminating all the other unethical options. This paper seeks to address the issue of whether or not
leadership is essential to the development of ethical decision making in modern organizations.
Modern organizations have proven to be boundary-less in the sense that they are
characterized by more collaboration and networking as opposed to the traditional organizations
(Champoux, 2016). This explains why there are more innovation and diversification of the
organizations’ activities in a bid to achieve the organizational goals and objectives in an effective
and efficient manner at minimal costs. The management style in the modern organization has
focused more on soft skills which have been proven by previous research to have a considerable

effect on the productivity of the workforce. Examples of these soft skills include establishing good
working relationships in the organization, listening, building consensus and understanding
(Champoux, 2016). Ethical decision making, therefore, becomes an essential aspect of the modern
organization because the business environment has become extremely dynamic and so
organizations are working hard to not only remain relevant but also competitive (DesJardins and
McCall, 2014). Ethical decision making also has a significant impact on the organization’s
reputation which brings about trust from the clients (DesJardins and McCall, 2014). Client
retention is the result of such trust, a goal that all organizations work towards.
Leadership is indeed essential to the development of ethical decision making in modern
organizations. According to Ciulla (2001), leadership and ethics go hand in hand. The analogy of
