M5 Discussion M5 - Will Prime Locations Change? There are several important demographic shifts that are expected to occur over the next several decades. Population growth in high-income countries is expected to slow and populations are actually expected to decline in countries such as Japan and Italy. Meanwhile, population growth in low-income countries is expected to be robust. Since there is a positive relationship between the changes in the size of the working-age population and per capita GDP, the growth in per capita GDP should be higher in today’s emerging economies than in today’s high-income countries. These changes could have significant implications for the location of markets and the location of labor forces. Another trend that could influence country selection is the propensity of innovative people to converge on places that develop reputations for facilitating creativity and innovation. Even with technologies that allow people to work from home or in virtual office environments, faceto-face contact will continue to be important—especially among the best and brightest. In light of the changing dynamics and the related discussion in chapter 13, please share your perspective. Question 1
The e-commerce is growing at incredible speeds whereby in 2013 it was reported that $105
billion worth of cross-border transactions were conducted on such platforms and it is projected
that by 2018 the figure will grow to $307 billion (Alibaba, 2016). Alibaba and related sites
influence my interest in importing and exporting based on the fact that they present me with an
opportunity to enter the international market quicker and effectively. The complexity of the
international trade makes the business very difficult and almost impossible to SME who have
limited capital at their disposal. With the current rapid use of e-commerce sites and the
increasing trade among SMEs, then it would be probable to speculate that SME will rely on such
sites to conduct their businesses. With such a powerful tool at the disposal of companies
importing and exporting can never be easier as this. SMEs makes the majority of the companies
in the business world and with such a tool they will have an opportunity to enter the international
market much easier, efficient and cheaper. The infinite resources provided on sites such as
Alibaba.com make it easier for companies whether big or small to create their independent
export strategies. With the falling of trade barriers, it makes the business environment much
more conducive to companies and thus can enter the International market without setbacks that
may discourage them to do so. With all barriers eliminated and the international market at my
disposal, I am obliged to enter into the import and export because it offers me a wider market
exposure that is risk-free and less time as an importer. The high level of confidence that these
sites instill in the buyers and the sellers makes the business to be such a great experience for me
as the buyer.

Question 2
The product that I searched for was a case cover for an iPhone 7 the site offered me a list of
potential companies selling the product. Alibaba has made the search process more easy, useful
and valuable to the user. Using an advanced algorithm that can filter products based on relevance
it greatly reduces the search time to only a few seconds and it gives a list of the potential
suppliers to the product. On reviewing the list of companies they have the characteristics that I
was looking for as a potential buyer. One drawback that I identified with the list of companies is
that the site provides a long list which makes it a difficult task finding the most suitable supplier.
The site, on the other hand, uses templates and dropping menus that make it easier to find the
contact information on the supplier. There is also a chat section where one can directly have a
one on one conversation with the supplier which ...
