Crime rates continue to rise in major cities throughout the United States. In Canada, the crime
rates are stable or even lower than expected. The recent shooting at a mosque in Quebec is not
indicative of the usual levels of crime in Canada as compared to the United States. There are various
reasons for this and much of it is due to the sociological make-up of both countries. Canada has a
strong leader in Justin Trudeau and they are secure in the confidence they have in the Prime Minister.
He is the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau who was a pioneer in Canadian politics
and travelled the land connecting with the people. When a country has solid leadership, there is less
unrest in the population and people are more content. This has an effect on the crime rate. In the United
States there is more unrest than has been seen since the sixties. The confidence in the current President
of the United States is very low if the latest approval ratings are accurate. There is serious unrest in the
country due to many major policy changes with worldwide implications. It is a volatile time with hate
crimes and race related crimes are increasing in the United States. This paper will focus in the
importance of leadership in reducing crime and why Canada has a lower crime rate in the United States.
Over the past 20 years, Canada recorded much lower rates of violent crime than the United
States did. However, rates for property offences have generally been higher in Canada, according to a
