Group dynamics is defined as the processes of psychological and system behavior occurring
within a social group or between social groups. The real understanding of the group dynamics
and the role it pays in a business a lot helps in the success of business management. The
existence of a good group dynamic in the workplace promotes healthy working focused towards
common goal and each individual will perform effectively in order to achieve goals set by the
group. Poor group dynamics has a great impact on the overall performance, with negative results
on the common goal or the project. Good group dynamic is contributed by several variables.
Discussed below are some variables that will facilitate the understanding of the group dynamics
and how to create and maintain a productive and positive dynamic in the group. First, recognize
how the personalities affect team dynamics. Every member in the group brings in his or her own
individual personalities and the necessary skills sets (Rubenstein-Montano, B., Liebowitz,
Buchwalter, McCaw, Newman, Rebeck, & Team, 2001).
Recognition of the each member in the form of work, level of aptitude and motivation can help
the management team to gain the understanding of how that person fits within the group as a
whole. In addition, this can help the management team to have the opportunity to note any gap in
experience or the behavior that requires to be filled with additional member groups with the aim
of helping achieve the set goals. Along with those members who contribute positively, there may
be also those whose behaviors, attitude negatively affect the dynamics in the group, thus
affecting the overall performance. There are some disruptive roles which might be less to point
out, but the can generate adverse effect on the group dynamics. For example, something like
social loafing might occur, indicating that some members of the group are exerting fewer efforts
than they would if working alone. Therefore, a manager who notices such changes quickly and in

the right manner cans the dynamic group in a positive way. If each member in the group sees his
or her productive contributions as valuable and accountable, then the social loafing is less likely
to occur among the members. Second, understand the life cycle of the group. The manner in
which the group is constructed and brought together can be illustrated in the following steps;
forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Identification and consideration of
where the group is within can provide the real perspective to all member of the dynamic group as
they progress together. Third, strong leadership is important within the group. A good leader
