The “Tilted Arc” was a work of art since it meets the internationally accepted standards of a sculpture done by a skilled artist and can capture a deep meaning of ideas and express it in a meaningful and creative way (Koch et al., 2008). The “Titled Arc’s” shape carries a lot of meaning since it can make the sophisticated ideas of the artist be represented in a simple and artistic manner that perfectly blends in with the environment giving it an aesthetic element. A perfect example to explain why the tilted arc is a work of art is in the way the arc shape can match the concentric rings on the entrance of the building. The arc can give focus on the shape of the floor by creatively mirroring the rings through the upward arc, which is a clear evidence of creativity. The public was not justified in proposing for the arc to be removed since beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Although the arc might not have brought the artistic aspect in the people who were against it, it is not enough justification for the arc to be removed.

The artist had freedom to express his ideas based on his understanding and perception of art, and the public should have therefore searched for an explanation of the artwork from the artist as opposed to refuting it. More often than not, most artistic work looks sophisticated, and the ordinary people might find it difficult comprehending it, it is, therefore, the artist in most cases given a chance to explain the work. The creation of an artist should be considered art even if the public does not agree with it since creativity in the artwork is about expressing oneself in the manner that one understands best as opposed to seeking public opinion. In some unique situations where the public consists of a talented artist, then they can be allowed to judge what is artistic and what is not after considering somebody’s work from all perspectives. However, in most of the cases, the artist should be given the liberty to define art since it is a skill; limitations kills creativity and leads to demotivation of talented and limitless artists.

To some extent, the sculpture fits into my definition of art since art is about creativity and mapping ideas in a way that is simple yet has a sophisticated meaning. However, I feel that the artist should have had some creativity in the location of the artwork to make it more convenient for the people walking towards the entrance since it could in some cases be an obstruction. Art is a matter of creativity and expressing oneself in a manner that is unique and admirable; it is advisable for art to be beautiful to the eye if possible, however, an artist still has the liberty to create something that meets their definition of beauty provided that they can be able to defend it

Thanks in advance
