The health system of Japan is organized in a way that the residents of Japan pays 30
percent of the medical bills while the government pays 70 percent of the bill. This also
includes services such as infectious disease control, prenatal care and screening examinations
(Ikegami & Campbell, 1999). The country also has an insurance system that is universal and
covers personal medical services. The system allows equal access to medical services by the
citizens. A government committee sets medical bills. All people of Japan by law, are required
to have insurance covers when employed or not. Those who are not covered by employers
participate in a national insurance program, which the local government administers.
There is no limitation on selecting facilities of choice or the physicians. They will be
covered at any facility they visit. Hospitals by law should not be profit making and must be
run by doctors. Profit-making corporations cannot operate or own a hospital. Shinzo Abe, the
current Prime Minister, has of late tried to revamp the health system more. The prime
