The choices made by media organizations about what stories to cover, what images to
show, who to interview, what sound bites to air, and how to present information can change the
way you perceive ethical issues. The two chosen events are AP’s legendary “Napalm Girl”
photographer Nick Ut to retire by CBS and Graphic content: when photographs of carnage are
too upsetting to publish
In as much there is no sole arbiter of what is or isn't ethical, and even if there were, some
images published by media houses can be provocative and misleading to the reader. For the news
covered in these two events, the editors chose not to conceal the disturbing photos, this might
have been to present unflinching pictures of the events for the greater good.
Media for some reasons usually affects our morals and ethics based on the type of content
published. Photos of dead and maimed children in bombed-out Gaza or bodies of victims lying in
Ukrainian cornfields are just an example of photos that leaves one in tears and such cases one
might need to be counseled.
In the “Napalm Girl”, The Vietnam war presented many tough ethical situations. Nick
Ut’s “Napalm Girl” photograph, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972, is not only a
shocking indictment of America’s war effort, it contains full frontal nudity of a minor. The
ultimate decision to print the photo on the front page of The New York Times must not have
been easy.
In the second event, a child's belongings from the MH17 crash are shown, the difference
is that the body-bagged corpses are not shown, just the belongings are shown. This shows how
socio-economic status come into play.

naked down a road after being hit by the accidental napalm strike. It would have been better for
the media not to publish this photo, for the obvious reason. This photo has always been faced
with criticism as it negatively represents the females.
