Refuges crisis have continuously become a major challenge in today’s contemporary
society. The term refugee can be defined from various grounds including on the perspectives
of the politicians, aid workers or volunteers, academics and the media. Typically, a refugee is
a person who fears of being prosecuted for race, religion nationality, membership of a certain
social group or political opinion is outside the nation of his nationality, and is also unable or
not willing to avail himself or herself of the protection of that particular country (Önder,
2008). Multiple factors have contributed to the increasing rate of refugees. The factors
include the global inequalities, individuals fleeing persecution and regimes, people running
away from the violence or the outbreaks of wars. Some of the recent examples of refugees’
challenges include the Kosovar who were literary forced from their homes by the conflict in
the Balkans and the genocide in Rwanda among others. The international assistance efforts
by individual countries and the International voluntary organizations such as the Red Cross
have been in the limelight in trying to provide help to the affected population. Notably, the
United Nations through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have
played a significant role in ensuring there are adequate protection and relief to all the
refugees.
