The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), was formed at the North Atlantic
Treaty Organization’s conference in Bonn in December 2001.ISAF’s role was to provide
security to the public in general. It was also to support the Afghanistan government in providing
a secure environment for the reconstruction and expansion of the security forces. Other security
tasks included;
•
Supporting the afghan national army.
•
Help the afghan government to disarm illegal armed groups.
•
Provide full support to the afghan national police in carrying out their activities.
ISAF’s mission was to help in the achievement of lasting peace and stability in the
country and its immediate neighbors.it was also mandated to secure Afghanistan so as to allow
for quick reconstruction and development in various areas including, restoration of schools and
medical facilities, development of infrastructure and water supply. The army of commanders
included;

U.S. Army General John F. Campbell, ISAF commander.

Major General Richard Nugee, ISAF chief of staff.
