Interviewee Profile Form This is a form to record your information for this assignment. Do not rely only on this form to determine everything you must include! Please look in Course Resources for instructions, contained in the Course Project Milestone 1: Interviewee Profile guidelines, grading criteria, and grading rubric in order to learn details of what to report on this form. Note the Tips for Successful Course Projects in the Course Project area in eCollege. Completing this form does not include or constitute your formal interview (Milestone 3).The purpose is to identify (and describe) an adult who is not a relative and who is willing to be interviewed and to secure your instructor’s approval of the interviewee for your official interview (Milestone 3). Type your answers to the following questions using complete sentences and correct grammar, spelling, and syntax. Note that the form is expandable.Indeed, you may need more pages to include the information that is requested in the guidelines for this assignment. Title: Milestone 1 Your Name:__________________________ 1. Describe the interviewee: profession or career, the culture of origin, and working phone number. Be specific. (20 points) The name of this interviewee is Lamin Bojang, and he migrated to the United States in 2009 so as to flee prosecution for contradicting the Gambia president’s claims of possessing the cure for the deadly AIDS disease. He resides in the Concourse Village in Brooklyn with his wife and four-year son. Although he is currently employed as a receptionist at the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, he is also pursuing an undergraduate degree in Political Science from the City College of New York. Mr. Bojang’s culture of origin is traditional African that emphasizes and recognizes the role of traditions and norms on every human activity including medical interventions for minor and major health conditions. An additional aspect of the culture of origin of this interviewee regarding treatment and healing is the role of both nuclear and extended family members in providing support during hospitalization and receipt of outpatient services. 2. State the number of years the interviewee has resided in your community. Please verify that the interviewee has been living in a culture other than the one of origin for at least the past 3–5 years.Provide a description of the current community (your community).Be specific. (20 points) 1 Mr. Bojang had resided in this community since 2009 when he arrived from his home country. The African migrant community in Brooklyn is dispersed and consists of the Concourse Village, where the interviewee lives, Rockaway sections, and the North and Central Bronx. The dispersion of this community of Sub-Saharan immigrants is designed in a manner that allows an individual that speak similar languages and observe same cultural values to live close to each other. For example, immigrants from Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and Sierra Leone are the dominant group in the Concourse Village and most of east Bronx while those from Nigeria are the major ones in the neighborhood such as Eastchester, Woodlawn and Hunts Point of the south, north, and central Brooklyn. Ethiopians are the third major migrant group in the area and mostly reside in the Rockaway section of the area. 3. Describe your relationship with the interviewee, such as friend, colleague, classmate, an employee at the local restaurant, healthcare worker, migrant worker, and so on. (10 points) The interviewee is a friend who experiences most of the challenges that migrants in the United States face on regular. We usually meet during our free times at the popular diner in the community where we share a meal and discuss issues bordering on immigration, access and quality of healthcare services, politics, and sports. Interestingly, we support the same soccer team in the English professional league. 4. Enumeratereasons why you selected this interviewee that speak to the interviewee’s culture and experiences with the healthcare system.Be specific.Describe the healthcare services that the interviewee has received in the current environment or community. (45 points) The decision to select this respondent was based on the ability of his demographics to access health insurance, the impact of a lack of access, to their experience in the country, and the role of traditional medicine and spiritual healing in their use of clinical services. Empirical data from various studies have shown that a significant portion of African-Americans that do not possess health insurance are immigrants from different parts of Africa. The kind of jobs that most of them get as migrants are low -level ones that do not include health insurance and therefore, restrict their access to the healthcare system. According to the interviewee, this low enrollment in the insurance system is the primary reason why a significant number of them use the emergency services department of public health institutions. The provisions of the law that obligate healthcare professionals to provide care services to all patients in the ER 2 regardless of their health insurance status is meeting the needs of this category of the population. Furthermore, traditional medicine is one of the aspects of African immigrants’ lives that have an immense influence on the nature of health care services they receive in the hospital setting. According to a study conducted by a team of researchers involving several African advocacy groups, traditional medicine and healers play important roles in shaping their perspective on healing and clinical services and create a conflict with medical practices. Although there is increased clamor for culturally skilled nursing in the country, the extents of some of these beliefs are not only controversial but difficult to observe. An additional area of the culture of the interviewee that influenced his selection for this interview is the need for spiritual care. Mr. Bojang explained that religious doctrines of Islam and Christianity are major influencers of the perception of African migrants on their ill-health, its causes and interventions or management. Therefore, it is a necessary that providers that plan to service this category of the population must understand these cultural issues as a means to the professional and ethical obligation of “care and protect.” 3 Course Project Milestone 2 Interview Guide and Questions Form This is a form to record your information for this assignment. Review the NR391_Milestone2_Interview_Questions_Guidelines.docx, and NR391_Differences Between Closed Open Ended Questions.docx in Course Resources prior to completing this form. Read the Course Project tab found under Course Home. Refer to Appendix A in your text and select five categories upon which you will concentrate for your interview guide and questions. Type your answers to the following questions using complete sentences and correct grammar, spelling, and syntax. Note that the form is expandable. Indeed, you may need more pages to include the information that is requested in the guidelines for this assignment. Title: Milestone 2 Your Name: __________________________ 1. Note the proposed date of the interview. Describe the location of the interview and how privacy will be maintained. Be specific. (20 points) The interview will be conducted on 31st March, Friday afternoon after the interviewee is through with his office work. Concerning the location, I will choose to meet with the respondent in one of the gardens near Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn so that he may not waste so much time on the traffic. Mc Carren Park would be a good choice because it has few people and distractions on weekdays, unlike on Saturdays and Sundays. The environment will give us ample time to converse during the interview. The environment is nature-like and will provide us with the privacy required to keep the interview as confidential. The place has enough security and I believe there would be no instances of people snooping around to overhear the interview. I will maintain a tone that will ensure that what we will converse during the interview will be heard for only the two of us. 2. Describe the process you will use for documenting your interview and what steps you will take to ensure its accuracy. For example, do you plan to take notes and then ask the subject for verification, or do you plan to record the interview in audio or video and then transcribe it? (14 points) Due to the lengthy and detailed nature of the interview, I would request the interviewee to allow me to record the conversation using my phone if that will be okay with him. Alongside with recording, I would be taking few short notes on the main points from time to time as I go. The recording will be very useful later after the interview because I would listen to the full recording and note down the important points that I missed out. Listening to the recorded interview will be a step to ensure accuracy in documenting. I will then transcribe the whole 1 interview by creating a simple spreadsheet that has a column for the question and the other column for the corresponding response. If it will be hard for him to allow me to take a recording audio, then I will be left with the choice of working hard on live note taking and then ask the respondent for verification. This step will make me lose much of the ‘conversation’ aspect of the interview, and it might not be accurate enough. 3. Identify five categories from Appendix A in your text from which you would like to develop primary (and follow-up) questions for your interview. The categories from which you may choose are listed below. • Biocultural Variations and Cultural Aspects of the Incidence of Disease • Communication • Cultural Affiliations • Cultural Sanctions & Restrictions • Developmental Considerations • Economics • Educational Background • Health-Related beliefs and Practices • Kinship and Social Networks • Nutrition • Religion and Spirituality • Values Orientation Type the names of the five categories you have chosen in the table below in the column marked “Categories.” 4. Develop one primary question for each of the five categories. Please note that the questions should be in your own words and designed to elicit meaningful responses, for example, openended or focused format. Use the table to type each question next to its corresponding category. (60 points) 5. Develop two follow-up questions for each primary question. Type these next to the corresponding primary questions. (40 points) 6. Indicate reasons for asking specific questions that relate to culture of origin and healthcare experiences. (50 points) Categories Primary Question Related to Category Category 1: How does your cultural sanctions and restrictions influence your experience and access to the current health care system? Transcultural Nursing Interview
Student’s Introduction to interviewee including explanation of the purpose of study
My name is XYZ and a second year nursing student at the XUZ University. This
interview is an assignment for a course named transcultural nursing. The primary purpose of this
study is to gain insight into the cultural practice of an ethnic group that could influence their
access to the healthcare system of the United States, and how of these traditional beliefs can
impact the quality of care received by the patients.
Kindly introduce yourself
My name is Lamine Bojang, a Gambian national that lives in the Concourse Village in
Brooklyn and a receptionist at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center. Also, I am currently pursuing
an undergraduate degree in Political Science at the City College of New York.
Please state your willingness to participate in this interview (Note that you have the right to
refuse to answer questions that you are uncomfortable with or stop this interview at any
point).
This student has explained that the purpose of this study is for educational purposes and
contribution to the body of knowledge on transcultural nursing. Therefore, I am willing to
participate in the interview by answering the questions to the best of my abilities.
How do your cultural sanctions and restrictions influence your experience and access to the
current health care system?
Although my cultural beliefs and sanctions are important aspects of the kind of health
care services that I would receive, I can say that they have a lesser influence on my access to the

healthcare system. In my experience, health insurance is the sole determinant of the kind access a
person gets regardless of their nationality and status.
With experiences like yours, what rules from your cultural background that restricts you
from accessing specific health services with the recent health care system? Also, please tell
me more about the types of foods and medicines recommended by the new health care stem
that you’re your culture forbids and the possible consequences.
In my experience and according to my cultural values and background, access to mental
health services is considered inadequate since conditions that are treated in these institutions
have spiritual causes that require appropriate traditional treatment and medications. Foods and
medicines made from pork are forbidden by religion since it is among the list of foods that
Muslims must avoid. The implication of consuming pork-based foods and medications is the loss
of faith and need for atonement by engaging in certain practices that are contrary to our faith.
What are some of the best decisions you made relating to education in the US compared to
your home country that you believe had an impact on your experience with the current
health care system delivery?
My immigration to the United States was due to the unlawful persecution of citizens by
the government was the best decision because it gave me a chance to rebuild my life and obtain a
quality higher education. The standard of teaching, quality of material, and access to a lot of
social services including health care makes the level of education in the U.S significantly better
than the one in my country. Although students of tertiary institutions in Gambia can access
health services within their university or school just like their American counterparts, the variety
and quality of services of the U.S. system make it better in several areas.

Are you saying that the current health care system would not be embraced by the
education system in your home country of origin? If yes, can you please elaborate on how
your enrolment in the US education system has impacted your experiences with the
modern health care system?
The cost of establishing the current health care system of the United States in my home
country is one of the reasons why its adoption by educational institutions in Gambia would be
impossible. As a developing country, Gambians expect the government to offer free health care
programs. However, my enrolment as a student of City College, York had afforded me an
opportunity to access a wide array of clinical and allied services would cost a fortune in my
home country. The student insurance policy allows me access to modern primary and specialized
services at a reduced cost. Also, the emergency department of hospitals gi...
