Description
For this individual project, I ask that you take part in participatory culture. You should use a preexisting image macro meme template to create your own instance of the meme and then write a short analytical reflection on your experience. I discuss image macros in the “The World of Memes” lecture recording, but if you are still unsure of what they are, the following entries offer some background:
Creating such memes is fairly easy using either simple graphics program like MS Paint or an online tool such as Winmeme (http://www.winmeme.com/) or Captionday (http://www.captionday.com/memegenerator).
Once you've created your image macro meme, write an analytical reflection (500-750 words) in which you do the following:
- Relate your understanding of the template and/or stock character (i.e. content that you yourself did not make) that you use.
- What is the original source of the image?
- What is that template and/or stock character generally used to say?
- What connotations (i.e. meanings that it brings to the superimposed text) does it have?
- Relate what it is that you are trying to express with your creation, and whether you think that it is successful.
- Were you liberated or constrained by the image macro template?
- Make a statement as to whether this experience will make you more or less likely to engage in memes, or participatory culture more generally, in the future, or, if you are already an active produser of memes, describe what draws you to them.
- Be sure to embed or include a link to your version of the meme.
As always, if you have questions about how to do this, please feel free to contact Prof. Gurney.

recognizability as well as momentum, and therefore, this suggests that the service is plugged in
by adapting the existing content of nature. So, the photos were in the initial template and what I
