Things fall apart is a book by the phenomenon Chinua Achebe about the fall of his main
protagonist named Okonkwo of the Igbo culture. Okonkwo is brought out as the most respected
and influential leader with a significant impact on the people of his culture. He is looked upon by
most of his peers and the fate of his community, Umuofia in Eastern seems to lie in his hands.
Okonkwo meets the expectation of his people and for a span of time brings respect and honor to
his village when he defeats Amalinze, the cat in a wrestling contest.
Winning the battle is a remarkable experience following the culture of his people. His defeat of
the cat brings out his strength and ability to fight for his people and to fight for his village in case
any harm came to it. This action results in his gain of fame and titles for his name and family to
become a wealthy and powerful man in spite of his father's weakness. In his community and
time, Okonkwo had every reason to prove himself considering the failure of his father. In fact,
his father’s failure put more pressure on him to demonstrate that he wasn’t as weak as he was.
Okonkwo’s father, who is a villain in the story, was a wild and lazy man. With a background like
that which Okonkwo had, it was vitally important for him to strive to be the exact opposite of his
father. The fact that he was wasteful drove Okonkwo to try his best to fend for himself and to
always have enough on his table. His father’s destructive nature and the fact that he always
borrowed money which he never gave back but rather spent this cash palm-wining created an
attitude of hatred in Okonkwo’s heart and an insatiable desire for him to be his fathers opposite.
