ESL 120A Compare to Tao Te Ching and The Prince, it is really easy to tell the differences in the aspects of how to be a good leader in Eastern culture and Western culture. The Prince, which written by Niccolo Machiavelli, is mainly talk about how a good prince should be Strong and smart, how a prince should have two personalities, one should be very positive and aggressive while facing people and enemy, the other one should be deceitful and decidedly while making judgements for the country. In Niccolo’s opinion, the only way of being a good leader is being aggressive and make the country strong. It is just opposite of what Lao-Tzu’s opinion is to be a good leader, a good man. In Tao Te Ching, Lao-Tzu’s thoughts are more likely to be teaching people to be kind, and “Tao” was formed, the central idea of Tao is that it is something in people’s daily life, it’s more like rules that people should follow to be good. In the principles of “Tao”, power and fame represent the desires in people, tile and power are not important, but in The prince, Power is everything, a good prince should know how to get more power and keep the power he has at present time, a lot different. In The Prince, Weapon is what’s necessary to have to keep peace, “War is just when it is necessary; arms are permissible when there is no hope except in arms.” (The Prince 4) which is saying that the war sometime is bot avoidable, so prepare of fighting is always wise. But in Tao Te Ching, it more like to convince people not to fight and give up the desire in people.

The comparison of Tao Te Ching and The Prince, tells the differences in the views of
being good leaders in different cultures. The Prince, which written by Niccolo Machiavelli,
spells that a good prince should be strong and wise and that a prince should have two
personalities; the prince should be very positive and aggressive while dealing with the nation and
adversaries, he should also be deceitful and cunning while making judgments for the leadership.
Niccolo’s opinion is that a good leader should be aggressive and use his strength to make the
country strong. His opinion contrasts that of Lao-tzu who advises that a good leader is a good
man. The two authors present similar roles of the government. While they agree on the purposes,
they disagree on the means and tactics to be used in carrying out the duties.
In Tao Te Ching, Lao-Tzu’s teaches people to be kind. “Tao” was formed around the
central idea the central idea of the daily people’s lives. It spells out the rules that people should
adhere to for them to be good and moral in the society. The principles of “Tao” are that power
and fame are the people’s desires and that they are not important. In The Prince, power is vital
and the most important aspect of governance. A good prince practices power to remain in his
position and uses it to protect his people. The aristocratic approach of Machiavelli shows that
“War is just when it is necessary; arms are permissible when there is no hope except in arms.”
(Machiavelli, 2008). The statement means that war is often unavoidable thus the leader should be
prepared for the fighting.
One purpose of government highlighted in the text is to wage war and protect its status
and that of its citizens. Niccolo writes about the qualities of a prince. In the context of the text,
the country faces threats from enemies. The prince symbolizes an aristocratic government that
emphasizes on rulership and the strict following of orders for the success of the nation. The
