In the Solitude of Self, Elizabeth Cady Stanton raises then expands upon the natural
rights philosophy, by arguing that both men and women face the same struggles and have
individual responsibility (Campbell, 1980). The Solitude of Self being her resignation speech,
she supports women’s long fight for equality on the premise that people are entitled to equality
and social dignity since each is different, and independently accountable for themselves. At the
time of her speech most women still depended upon a male figure, husband or father but argued
that independent of gender, one has to struggle in life to survive.
