In the recent years, casino gambling has taken a deep root as an economic activity in the
states of the U.S. Although in the beginning there was a great controversy about its nature and
existence, its popularity has grown exponentially over the years amid all issues that it is
associated with crime, alcoholism, and prostitution, vices that affect the society (Thompson,
2001). Casino gambling would be a part of the larger gaming industry which includes other
games such as bingo and charitable games, card games, lotteries among others. Gambling has
brought a great economic impact in the states by providing revenue through taxes, employment,
and economic stability in these areas (Thompson, 2001).
Casino gambling was legally introduced in Nevada in 1931 where it was deemed to
counter the depression that the state was going through at that time (Thompson, 2001). The
legislature would take a firm step to legalize casino gambling as it viewed this gambling activity
as a source of revenue which would help uplift the state’s economy. At the end of the Mexican
war in 1848, the United States made Nevada the 36th state and at this time, its gold and silver
mines were in decline and the state started falling into financial depravity and economic stability.
As a result, the legislature of the state thought it wise to legalize this activity as a means of
generating income and revenues for the local government (Thompson, 2001). Casino gambling

legalization also took place in the state of California during the Gold Rush era. The Native
Americans had been living on tribal lands and reservations that were faced by adverse poverty
and low incomes. They suffered unemployment, alcoholism, school dropouts and extensive
crime. In the bid to control these setbacks, they introduced gaming activities in these reserves.
Later on, they would indulge in gaming as a source of income and also employment. But the
California state felt that this move would increase crime levels and at the same time it wouldn’t
