The Whale Rider opens with the birth of twins, a boy and a girl (Keisha Catle-Hughes)
but the mother and the boy do not survive. The girl’s father, Porourangi (Cliff Curtis), who is an
artist leaves New Zealand, with the girl left under the care of her grandparents, Koro and Nanny
Flowers. Niki Caro was written and directed this highly inspirational story derived from Witi
Ihimaera’s story describing the events of idyllic daily rural rhythms. According to William
Thomas, an online reviewer, the director manages to combine the classic themes with the little
seen cultural perspectives which act like a breath of the fresh South Pacific air to come up with a
crowd puller which is both uplifting and captivating. The plot is a sensitive and often plodding
exploration of the relationship existing between the traditional and conservative Koro and the
eager-to-please granddaughter, Pai, who adores him but is harshly countered by his
disappointment of her.
Thus, the movie cannot be dismissed simply as a kind of simplistic fable as it is a story
revolving around real people but living in the modern times. However, The Whale Rider has
