Hypothesis: Our hypothesis is that the lack of clarity and verifiable epidemiological evidence to
support the role of exposure to bisphenol A in the development of obesity and obesity-related
conditions are enough reasons to identify ways to avoid contact with the compound despite its
ubiquitous nature in the environment.

How to Avoid the Obesity Related to Plastic Chemical BPA
Abstract
The role of diet and nutrition in the development of obesity has been established through
various epidemiological studies. However, the potential role of environmental factors such as
exposure to hazardous chemicals in the development of excess weight is currently attracting the
right attention and focus of researchers from various clinical and human health disciplines.
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common industrial chemical compound use to prevent bacterial growth,
corrosion, and other forms of contamination from storage containers including plastics, beverage
and metal food cans. Recent studies show a link between this chemical and estrogenic activity in
both genomic and non-genomic receptor cells. This finding has increased the level of scrutiny on
the compound considering the high incidence rate of metabolic disorders such as diabetes
mellitus and obesity. The goal of this research paper is to examine the epidemiological literature
on the methods that can be used to avoid exposure to BPA from dietary sources through the
search of various scientific databases. Data collected would be meta-analyzed using a randomeffects model. The result of the analysis showed that periodic fasting, dietary modification
through the consumption of fresh foods, and lifestyle changes are methods that can be used to
reduce the potential of BPA-induced obesity. While we acknowledge that the short period and
limited sample population is a limitation of this study, it is an ideal start into the investigation of
measures for managing dietary exposure to BPA.
Literature Review
In the past three decades, the prevalence rate of obesity in the United States has increased
by over 50 percent thereby making it one of the most important epidemics in the country. The

fact that it cost the nation approximately $147 billion in medical costs makes it one of the most
expensive public health management issue in the country. Therefore, the level of fear that food
storage containers contain compounds that could increase the potential of an individual to
increase their body weight is understandable. According to Magliano & Lyons (2012), several
cross-sectional epidemiological studies have shown that there is an increased evidence of the role
of environmental factors in an individual’s predisposition to obesity. They claimed that exposure
to bisphenol A during childhood is correlated with the development of obesity since in-vitro
examination of animals affirm...
