This is the fifth volume of Piaget's series of psychological research as he tries to
understand and explain children's ideas. The present study is probably the most valuable of the
significant literature works of this author since it scientifically deals with the moral behavior of
children which had remained to be a mystery. The research is based on an interrogative method
which is highly preferred by the author, he used the same method in all earlier works. This
writing style allows the reader to analyze the situation and have a deep thought about it before
moving to the next line.
The core theme of this book is that there are mainly two attitudes concerning morality
that are discernible to children below the age of twelve. Children below the age of six tend to
regard what has been imposed on them by their parents or other family members as the right
thing. By the time they approach the age of twelve, they start changing their thought towards
what they think it's right according to themselves but not according to what they have been
instructed. At this age, the altitude of what is right gives way to the one in which what is right is
slightly determined by themselves. However, according to Piaget, we cannot actually draw the
line between the two stages of a child's understanding of morality, but the differences between
the two stages are very clear especially for those of us who are keen on understanding children
behaviors.
