The purpose of this is to look at the ways the European powers dealt with the aftermaths of large-scale wars changed through time, and why. The Congress of Vienna was a meeting of European leaders in 1815. These leaders felt a need to restore order in the continent following severe wars, especially those led by Napoleon Bonaparte. This document is a treaty which was written and co-signed by European leaders then, among other dignitaries. The treaty was signed on June 9, 1815. Austria, Prussia, Russia, and Great Britain were the key players. The Congress of Vienna was a means to establish a balance of power within Europe, one that would deter imperialistic tendencies by European leaders. The document dictated the manner in which borders would be drawn across the region. An example of border change from the treaty is from Article XV, which states, “His Majesty the King of Saxony renounces in perpetuity for himself and all his descendants and successors, in favour of his Majesty the King of Prussia, all his right and title to the provinces, districts, and territories, or parts of territories, of the kingdom of Saxony” (Final act of the congress of Vienna-Wikisource, 2016). This document established the modes through which matters relations among the member states would be addressed. The Congress of Vienna was intended for the leaders of the countries whose interests were in some way, affected by the new rules in the region. Besides the four key governments, other European states contributed to the signing of the treaty as well. This document shows that life in this time period was war-torn in these regions, and rules were needed to help maintain peace. This treaty also shows that at this time in history, Europe was ruled by only a few strong leaders (Final act of the congress of Vienna-Wikisource, 2016). The Congress of Vienna came at a time European leaders were eager to restore aristocracy in their dominions. This eagerness of European leaders influenced the writing of this document greatly. The authors laid out exactly who would rule each section of Europe, to ensure no one would question who led each dominion. The document was used as a means to record the progress of this convention. It would act as a reference point for the newly established rules. Besides, it was a clear indication of where each member state belonged. As such, the document was historically accurate. After analyzing this document, many questions arise about this time period. How do members of lower and middle class feel about the new treaty that has just been put into place? Why were the countries in Europe so divided and war-torn that a document like this had to be made? Journals from people of the middle and lower class may help to answer these questions. Also having secondary sources stating the economic and religious climate may help to answer the second question. This document is significant to Western Civilization, because it helped shape the balance of power throughout Europe for nearly a century. This document is also significant because it explains how difficult it was to gain peace during this era. References Final Act of the Congress of Vienna/General Treaty. (2016, January 6).
