Introduction
It is important to clearly identify aspects of domestic violence so that related cases can be dealt
with effectively. This is bearing in mind that most cases received are related to substance abuse
and domestic violence. It is worth noting that there are relations between the two with cases of
substance abuse influencing domestic violence.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, willful intimidation, physical
assault, battery and any other behavior that is abusive to an individual amount to domestic
violence as long as it is perpetrated by a close individual to the victim (NCADV, n.d.). The
abuser in this case will always seek to exert control and have power over the victim in a
relationship.
Cycle of abuse in domestic violence situations
In a domestic violence, there is a common pattern that is depicted to be followed. Depending on
the relationship, the cycle may take different timelines from a single day to weeks or even
months. The stages are divided into three: tension building, explosion/incident and making
up/calm stage in that sequence. In the first stage, tension develops over common issues that are
