Writing for Multilingual Learners (WRIT 190B) Spring, 2017 Timothy Cauller, Ed.D. Moravian College Reading Journal Project Guidelines Project Description The Reading Journal (RJ) project is a semester-long project that is designed to help students develop their interest and ability in reading well-written magazine or newspaper articles on topics not directly associated with students' regular course work. Given that there exists a strong correlation between reading well and writing well, it is expected that this project will help students acquire useful vocabulary, a better understanding of the concept of author style and voice, and a greater insight into what constitutes quality writing in a variety of genres. Weekly entries to students' Reading Journals will provide regular, focused practice in summarizing the written ideas of others and expressing those ideas clearly and succinctly in students' own words. The Reading Journal project will also serve as a written exploration of students' opinions and comments on the themes of the articles read. Tusdals. Guidelines A. Reading Journals are due every week on Mondays throughout the semester. B. Reading Journals should be labeled in order (RJ #1, RJ #2, etc.) with the correct date. C. Each Reading Journal must include a photocopy of the article and accurate reference information: Name and date of publication, name of author (if listed), page numbers, and RJ draft number. D. Articles must be from a quality publisher. Publishers and online sources must be approved by the instructor in advance. Examples of acceptable newspapers include: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and The Morning Call. Examples of acceptable magazines include: Time, Newsweek, Smithsonian, and National Geographic. Sources that are not acceptable for this project include: CNN (online), Yahoo News, abcnews, and other similar online sources. E. Articles should be of general interest and not from an academic journal. F. Reading Journal entries should be no more than two pages (total) in length. G. There are three sections to a complete Reading Journal. The first section, labeled "Summary” (in BOLD), is one-half page long (no longer!). This section summarizes in your own words the main points of the article. H. The second section, labeled "Discussion" (in BOLD), should be one (1) page long. In this section, you will discuss your opinion about what you have read. This section discusses your ideas, such as: What do you think about the main topic (or a related topic) that is discussed in the article? Do you agree with the author's points or conclusions? Why? Do you disagree? Why? I. The third section, labeled "Vocabulary" (in BOLD), should include 3-5 new vocabulary words that you discovered in the article. You must provide a definition or synonym for each word based on how the vocabulary word is used in the article. Do not directly copy the dictionary definition-use your own words (as much as possible). new vocal e Newspaller or magazine for the artical by summary Discussion lost 3 2 wake of the recession as re- would monitor the time profes- being paid with tax dollars you grants that can power eco- adjuncts a Virginia Judge's Ruling Puts Pressure on ida vil. Summary
The article Virginia Judge's Immigration Ruling Increases Pressure on White House
addresses the executive order that was issued by President Trump to bar Muslims from seven
