Introduction
A progressive disciplinary policy refers to a system that is used to best correct an
employee’s performance issues. In addition, it is also used to safeguard them against any unfair
dissolution lawsuits as well as allowing one to make sure that the worker who is fired as a result
of lesser performance was treated equally and in accordance to the policies of the involved
company. In disciplinary policy, discipline is compared to the principle of the “hot stove” rule.
This rule is a similarity to the breaching of an organization’s discipline and touching a hot stove.
This tries to show that the employees are aware of the consequences of touching a hot stove and
hence should relate it to breaching the disciplinary requirements of a company. The rule
therefore tends to forewarn the employees as well as create consent of the immediate
consequences of breaching a company’s disciplinary expectations.
In a progressive disciplinary policy, the first step an HR manager should take is an oral
reprimand. In this case, once a supervisor identifies an employee’s performance difficulty, they
should assign an oral reprimand (Council, E.H, 2014). The supervisor is required to ask the
worker if there may be any long-term complications or skills insufficiencies which require to be
improved. Besides, the human resource manager is also required to prepare a memo or preserve
comprehensive notes to file concerning the discussion made just in case additional action is
essential. Therefore, the manager should ensure that they hold a discussion with their employees
in order to ensure that there are no problems affecting their performance.
