Description

,The primary goal of your last assignment is to critically analyze the primary features of the American national government. The results of your analysis will indicate what you have learned over the last five weeks. In order to accomplish this task, it is important to critically evaluate the key facets of our American democracy.

You have been preparing for this final assignment each week by constructing a detailed outline of the Final Paper’s main points through the weekly Learning Activities. In addition, you have read the course text and course readings, reviewed videos, and researched additional material for each week’s assignments and for this paper. This week, you will put all of those outlines, readings, reviews, and research together into a one summative paper.

As we wrap up our course, reflect back on what you have learned about the key structures, systems, roles, and processes that embody our national government. Focus on the strengths and weaknesses, advantages and disadvantages, and positive and negative impacts of these aspects of our democracy. Use what you have learned so far to evaluate our national government and recommend ways to enhance what works and repair what is not working well. It is important to understand that this paper is not simply a cut and paste of your four Learning Activities. While the research you have completed can serve as a strong base it is important that you implement any comments from the instructor, as well as further expand on the material. Appropriate transitions and headings are needed to ensure a cohesive paper.

Construct a six-page paper based on the detailed outlines that you created over the last four weeks. It is important to utilize APA headings major sections of your paper in order to ensure that the paper is easy to follow. A model POL201 Final Paper Guide is provided for you to download and utilize when completing your Final Paper.

Running HEAD: U.S CONSTITUTION 1 The Constitution Patricia Perry Ashford University 3/20/2017 U.S CONSTITUTION 2 The Constitution: Provide a topic sentence that briefly describes one strength and one weakness of the U.S. Constitution. The Constitution was written such a long time ago so there are several strengths and weaknesses. I believe that strength is that it provides a strong foundation when it comes to protecting us it provides a government for us the people of the United States. It gives us the people the freedom to live life the way we want without the government making us do things that we don’t agree with. The weakness that I feel that the U.S, Constitution was written such a long time ago some of the things are out dated and the information is very concrete not allowing for room for process for change. We are given the opportunity to vote for the politicians that we want to serve for us but we don’t actually get to vote on new laws and/or policies. Provide a topic sentence that recommends one option to maintain the strength and one to correct the weakness. In order to maintain the strength of the U.S constitution, the government should not change or make an amendment without letting the people of the state aware. LEARNING ACTIVITY WORKSHEET - Week Three Please review the full assignment prompt and the Week 5 Final Paper instructions located within the classroom and in the POL 201 Course Guide before beginning this assignment. Utilizing the worksheet below, develop detailed paragraphs that focus on the first main point for your final paper. For each section, a minimum of one fully-developed paragraph is required. A fully developed paragraph should be 5 sentences in length. Each paragraph should include at least one in-text APA citation that provides support for the topic. At least two scholarly sources from the Ashford University library (not including your textbook) with in-text citations utilized within your paragraphs are required. Two new sources should be utilized each week to meet the minimum of eight required sources for the final paper. By finding and supporting your material with these sources each week, you will have the research necessary to construct a strong final paper. For help with writing and citations, please review the handouts and tutorials provided by the Ashford Writing Center. 1. Branches of Government: Judiciary. A. One strength of one the judiciary (Use the space below to complete this section.) The power for a fair trial is the strength of the United States judiciary. An accused person is innocent until proven guilty. The state’s job is to prove that the person being accused is actually guilty of what they are being accused of. T his allows the person being accused to know that the justice system will make the best decision and the decision is not impartial. These systems help protect the ones being accused. Furthermore, cases are conducted in a speedy and efficient manner making the accused spend less time in the courtroom ("Judicial power in a federal system: Canada, United States, and Germany", 2013) This makes the accused spend fewer resources in their cases. B. One weakness of the judiciary (Use the space below to complete this section.) One of the weaknesses of the United States judicial system is the process in where they make a determination whether a person is guilty of what they are being accused of. Even though a police officer can collect evidence in the correct procedure found in the policies, the evidence might be rejected in court and not allow it to be used. The police officers collect information, however, they don’t follow proper protocol and eventually the cases are thrown out. For example, if a police officer presents a recorded tape of the plaintiff, but the plaintiff was unaware that they not being recorded, then the recording can be thrown out (Potter, 1929). C. One option to maintain the strength of the judiciary (Use the space below to complete this section.) For example, the judges and magistrates are appointed by the other organs of the government. Through the constitution, they also have the powers to remove a sitting judge or magistrate ("Judicial power in a federal system: Canada, United States, and Germany", 2013). If the magistrates and judges were allowed to do their work without interference, then the criminal justice system would be fair to all. D. One option to correct the weakness of the judiciary (Use the space below to complete this section.) The procedure and regulations required by the police in collecting evidence should be reviewed and changed. This is very important because it would not allow people who committed the crimes to walk away without any consequences due to someone gathering wrong evidence. For example, the legislature should change the laws in the collection of evidence to include secret recordings in cases of high profile people and where gathering evidence might be hard (Potter, 1929). 2. America’s Democracy

Introduction
The United States is a democracy based on the fact the laws governing the state are
agreed upon by the majority votes. Every decision in America has to be made through votes and
where the majority chose a law its implementation will be done without fail. America's
democracy has enabled the nation to remain successful in its activities since policies are
implemented in time and fairly. Through the American government, it has become possible for
laws to be created and through bureaucratic and state agencies, the government has managed to
successfully implement policies.
Describe one strength and one weakness of the U.S. Constitution
Strength of the U.S Constitution
The U.S constitution is amendable when a need arises. This feature of being amendable
makes the U.S Constitution a living constitution since it is adaptable to the dynamic needs of the
American people. The amendable nature of the constitution makes it a self-correcting and selfregulating makes it a timeless constitution since it changes as the needs of the Americans change
over time. This feature is further strengthened by the fact that the amendments are made in the
best interest of the majority as opposed to the minority (Jevtić, 2017). On the same note, the
amendments of the constitution are designed in such a way that requires complex procedures so
as to avoid the approval and ratification of amendments that are ill-conceived.

Weakness of the U.S Constitution
One of the weaknesses of the U.S constitution is that it does not have set terms of the law
in regard to the terms that the members of Congress (Senate and House of Representatives) can
serve. In the current situation, the members of the Senate can serve an unlimited number of sixyear terms while the members of the House of Representatives may serve an unlimited number
of two-year terms (Shair‐Rosenfield & T Stoyan, 2017). This makes these members to only do
what is necessary to warrant them a re-election instead of focusing on the real issues that face
America. This means that they do not significantly assist the taxpayers who pay them in any
way.
Recommendation to maintain the strength
The constitution needs to be more flexible so that more amendments should be made in
regarding the changing needs of the American people. This is due to the fact that the world today
is so dynamic and constant changes are needed so as to be at par with the development of the rest
of the world (Jevtić, 2017). Making the constitution more flexible will mean that the constitution
will grow and develop at the same pace as America.
Recommendation to correct the weakness
