Discussion 1: Impact of Disasters, Crises, and TraumaDisasters, crises, and traumas can have devastating effects on individuals, families, and communities. In the aftermath of any of these occurrences, survivors might suffer from physical injury, grieve the loss of a loved one, or simply try to come to terms with the traumatic event itself. In addition, community resources might be depleted, and safe havens, such as schools and worshipping centers, might be destroyed. The effects of disasters, crises and traumas vary and are specific to the particular event and location. What is true of all disasters, crises, and traumas is that the event(s) challenge the coping resources of impacted individuals and communities. In this Discussion, you will analyze how a disaster, crisis, or trauma with which you are familiar impacted individuals, families, and communities.To prepare for this Discussion:Think about how mass shootings, terrorist attacks, combat exposure, disasters, and domestic violence might impact individuals, families, and communities.Identify a disaster, crisis, or trauma with which you are familiar. Think about the ways in which the disaster, crisis, or trauma impacted individuals, families, and/or communities.With these thoughts in mind:By Day 3Post a brief description of a specific disaster, crisis, or trauma with which you are familiar. Then, explain two ways in which the disaster, crisis, or trauma impacted individuals, families, and/or communities. Provide specific examples to illustrate your post. The goals of crisis intervention theories and models might include restoring survivors' pre-crisis equilibrium, reframing survivors' views and beliefs about disasters, crises, or traumas, or helping survivors choose effective behaviors and attitudes to cope with their situations. The developmental stages of individuals impacted by such events, and the interrelationships between such individuals and their environments, are important considerations when developing an effective crisis intervention approach.In this Discussion, you will apply an eclectic approach to crisis intervention, using three different crisis intervention models.To prepare for this Discussion:Consider how an eclectic approach to crisis intervention might be used to respond to disasters, crises, and traumas.Reflect on the crisis, disaster, or trauma you described in Discussion 1 this week.Identify three crisis intervention models you might use to respond to the disaster, crisis, or trauma.Think about how each model might inform strategies and/or techniques you employ to respond to survivors of the disaster, crisis, or trauma.With these thoughts in mind:By Day 3Post an explanation of how you might use an eclectic approach to intervene in the disaster, crisis, or trauma you described in Discussion 1.
