Description

Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website and take a look at the Community Health Status Indicators page. Select your state and county and then explore how your county compares to other counties with regard to different indicators of community health. These indicators may include mortality, morbidity, healthcare access, physical environment, and social factors. As you investigate, take note of the categories in which your county scores “worse” than other areas. Then, interview someone who works in the healthcare (or related) fieldthis could be a family member, friend, coworker, professor, or someone else. Interview this person to learn about his or her experience dealing with the indicators that you discovered are worse in your community than in other areas. NOTE: Remember to use the Interview Consent form to obtain formal consent from the interviewee prior to the interview. The form is located in the Assignment Guidelines and Rubrics section of the course. After your interview, write a 250–500-word journal entry that addresses the following: 1. List the community health status indicators that are worse in your community than in others. 2. How is your interviewee involved with the community health status indicators discussed? 3. How does the person you interviewed and the healthcare community in which he or she is involved deal with these issues? 4. Reflect on why your county is better or worse in some indicators of community health than others. What might explain this difference? This should come from your own reflection, your interview notes, and your findings from the CDC website.

Community Health Status Indicators
The indicators that are worse off in Essex as compared to others include those of cancer
older adult asthma and older adult depression. As far as cancer is concerned, the adjusted cancer
rate in Essex County is at a high of 511.7 (per 100,000) which is quite high compared to the U.S.
median of 457.6 (CDC). This rate was determined according to incidence rates for all races,
cancer sites and also all ages. As far as older adult asthma is concerned, the percent of older
adults that were diagnosed with asthma in Essex County was at 5.4%. This is a high when
compared to the U.S. median of 3.6. Sadly, more than 23 million people in the U.S. have
Asthma (U.S. Department of Health Service). This percentage is for the prevalence of Asthma in
adults that were beneficiaries to the Medicare free-for-service. Adults aged between 65 years and
older were used in the study. These adults were identified through the claims they made at
Medicare.
The other indicator is older adult depression. In Essex County, MA alone, it was
determined that 16% of the adults in the community were living with depression (CDC b). This
was a high compared to the 12.4% median (CDC b). Specifically, adults between the ages of 65
and above were considered in the study. These adults were also identified through their claims
with Medicare. The final indicator is the high housing costs which were at a high of 41.3%
