Dinopoulos, E. & Wooton, I. (2008). International trade and the acquisition of skills. The
International Trade Journal, 3(4), 389-414.
The author suggests that are various reasons why countries do engage in international
trade. The main reason is that international trade is more alluring as it prevents countries
from entering into poverty. This is because some countries are better with respect to
certain areas of production. As an example of China is much well advanced in the
manufacturing of toys while the United States is more stable in the manufacturing of
computers. The Chinese based companies are able to manufacture toys at a much lower
cost as compared to what Americans could use manufacturing the same toys. Likewise,
the Americans can comfortably manufacture computers at a lower cost as compared to
Chinese manufacturing the very same computers. In situations where both countries
manufacture both products but refused to engage in international trade, then the countries
would drive themselves into an economic despair since the manufacturing costs would be
much higher as compared to the money generated from the sale of these products.
International interactions. (2007). London: Gordon and Breach.
The author of this journal suggests that free trade also helps to prevent the unfair
competition of the low-paid foreign workers. A country’s wage level is largely
dependent on the productivity of its available workforce. With regard to this, a large
workforce that is available in a country that specializes in one area of work will result to
a lower pay than a small available workforce which specializes in similar area of work
since the larger workforce offers employers with a larger selection pool from which they
can easily choose their employees. The skill level plays a major role as the lowly paid
workers have little or no training on the use of equipments used in manufacturing and
production. The higher skilled the employee, the higher pay they will receive in
undertaking various tasks.
Ogg, F. (2013). Appendix XI: The American Political Science Review. The American Political
Science Review, 24(1), 187.
Ogg suggests that a country cannot make everything better and cheaper than foreigners.
This is because, American workers do not specialize in all the areas of production and
manufacturing. Being in a position to allow to countries that specialize in certain areas f
production usually increases the Pareto effect as the trading parties involved benefit from
this trade. The engagement of global trade usually increases the prosperity of all
countries that are involved. The involved countries will gain products that they could not
be able to produce efficiently thereby receiving income from trades they could have
never received from the sale of the products in their own country.
Pease, K.-K. (2015). International Organizations. Hoboken: Taylor and Francis.
In this book, we find that US citizen cannot solely “buy American” as it has inefficient
production. The costs would be huge and it would be uncertain that jobs would actually
be saved. The overall costs of paying for American made products will be too expensive
to the consumers as compared to purchase of foreign made products. With respect to jobs,
there are restrictions on imports that causes reciprocating restrictions to be imposed in
foreign countries thereby decreasing competition within a country since there will be less
amount of products for consumers to choose. The value of a country’s currency will also
decrease as the people will spend less on foreign products. The ultimate results are that
the currency’s value will rise too high to a point where it makes the country’s products
less competitive in the foreign markets.
World politics. (2010). Guilford, Ct: Dushkin.
From this we find that we ought to limit foreign trade to countries that engage in free
trade as this would automatically ruin a nation’s economy. The idea behind engaging in
fair trade is to appeal in the sense to create an equal playing ground for the countries
when it comes the sale of products. It is also unreasonable as the number of products
which will be available in the country will be small thereby forcing the consumers to
spend more money on this product. With this regard, the products will be highly priced
and consumers will not like to purchase the products. Competitiveness drives the price
down. Hence, we need a larger selection pool for products and we should trade with
countries that do not engage in fair trade practices.
