There is an actual measure and an ultimate measure. Criterion deficiency refers to dimensions in the ultimate measure that are not in the actual measure (Levy, 2013). Criterion deficiency limits a criterion’s relevancy when the dimensions are important, but being left out of the actual measure. Criterion contamination is when things are measured by the actual criterion but not the ultimate criterion (Levy, 2013). One way that criterion contamination limits a criterion’s relevance is by measurement error (Levy, 2013). For instance, the performance measurement might change, even though the actual performance has not changed. When that is the case, there is a measurement error. The measurement error is random, while the second cause of criterion contamination, bias, is systematic (Levy, 2013; Berry, Sackett, & Sund, n.d.).
