This is a take-home, open-book writing assignment that will count as your second exam,
covering the Northern European Renaissance, Baroque Italy, Baroque Netherlands, and Rococo
periods. Each essay question is worth 25% of the exam grade. The entire assignment, typed and
double-spaced, should be 4 – 5 pages long.
Please limit your selection of artworks ONLY to those we have studied in class, and choose
different works of art for each essay. No images are necessary, but please fully identify each
piece you discuss by title, artist/architect, and date.
Do not consult any additional research sources - just use your textbook, notes, the class slides,
and your own observational skills…and please proofread for spelling and grammar!
1. Baroque religious artworks are often noted for expressing human emotion in new
ways. Using 3 examples, including at least one sculpture, discuss the ways in which
artists have created a sense of emotion in their works, and the role that such emotional
expression played in religious art.
